Call Week Conclusion

July 12, 2022

Call is over

Or I guess it will be in ~2 hours. I had included in my July goals: Practice stoicism during call week.

And you know what? I think it worked.

It’s hard to say, because every call week is different. I had slightly below average inpatient volume, especially for overnight calls, which definitely helped (and is not under my control). But I also set myself up for success more than usual with respect to childcare/support, and I actively resisted my initial feelings when I heard my paging app on more than one occasion. I also really tried to limit other responsibilities (GME, etc). During my 7 days on call, my primary work responsibility is call. I attended required meetings (yesterday was a 12 hr day!) but did not attempt to work on non-urgent projects.

I also stayed ruthlessly organized and on top of my inboxes, notes & patient calls, which helped avoid that panicky piled-up feeling that I’ve gotten in the past when it just feels like I don’t even KNOW what’s out there which definitely compounds call stress. But again – it wasn’t a crazy high volume week, so it’s a bit hard to say how much was just luck.

Either way, it was good practice for future (crazier) weeks!

Total Strength With Andy #2 – Almost done!

Today is my last TS2 workout! I ended up really liking this program. Lots of squats and shoulder press and compound moves. I can absolutely see and feel more muscle definition from this program.

Right now I want to focus more on running, but want to stay strong AND keep any hard-earned muscle mass so will plan on continuing ~3 lifting days/week, and keeping things on the heavier weights side. (Well, as heavy as I can go with home dumbbells – our biggest are 25 lb x 2 which I often use for squats, deadlifts, etc). I may try the Peloton “3 day splits” (ie Callie or Robin’s 3 day splits here) vs Caroline Girvan Iron Series.

recommend!

I am also training for a 5K (just to improve speed) in Sept. Yesterday I ran 2 consecutive tempo miles at 8:57/mi which is definitely progress! Training in the summer humidity is rough but I’m thinking it may pay off when it cools down? Which might be December, but it *will* happen . . .

I am not sure my pie in the sky marathon idea will come to fruition this year (due to practical concerns like costs – both time and $) but I’m still thinking about it 🙂

Sarah! I feel like you sailed through call this week. That must be a really good feeling given how much this has been a source of stress for you in the past. Nice work!

Also, I think I’m going to take on your habit of switching up your workout goals. I’ve been doing nothing but strength training for a year (which I needed to do postpartum, and it worked, and I’m super happy with the results, but … I’m bored). I always feel like I have to stick with the same routine endlessly and I’m not sure why!

I know – true, would be logically extremely easy. Or even A1A: http://a1amarathon.com

This is not close to you, but it looks super cool: https://runspaceforce.com/. And there’s the Space Coast 1/2 on Thanksgiving weekend.

I’ve also heard lots of good things about the Donna Marathon in Jacksonville, (https://breastcancermarathon.com/) though it’s not close to you either.

And all the Disney races if you haven’t done one.

Have you done one of the Disney races yet? There’s also the Space Coast Marathon and 1/2 Marathon Thanksgiving weekend, which has a loyal following. People also really like the Donna marathon and 1/2 in Jacksonville. Those aren’t super close to you, but sometimes it’s fun to make a little trip out of it.

Sarah, you need some 30lb dumbells. Glad your call week wasn’t too heinous!

You do need some 30lb dumbbells. It’s time!

I really think you would love Caroline Girvan’s Iron Series- all focused strength and lifting, and workouts are TOUGH but all 30-40 minutes max. Agree with OMDG- you will definitely need a few bigger dumbbells! 💪

I need to get some heavier dumbbells! My heaviest is 20. Which is fine for most moves but not all! I’m still looking for a strength training program. I finished Morning Meltdown this spring and haven’t found a good next program on Beachbody yet. I’d like to stick w/ that platform since it’s pretty inexpensive and has lots of options. I tried MBF and didn’t care for the repetitive nature of those workouts so I am still looking.

I am glad call week was not bad overall! I bet having Josh NOT on call over the weekend really really helped. But it’s probably hard to swing that going forward since he seems to have a lot of call!

I liked LIIFT4 and 80 day obsession but the latter was a long commitment!

      Caroline Girvan is free!

I have been reading some daily stoic at your recommendation and enjoying it! Trying to channel some of the principles into my own thinking to stay calm and keep perspective during stressful times.
