Base Building Week

No super hard or intimidating (to me) workouts this week, just miles. I guess I am base building!

(Still trying to decide on next race, but probably Jacksonville Marathon vs Kiawah Island Marathon. Probably the former, but they haven’t officially released the date yet so I can’t count on it! Either way, I have ~9m to base build + train and will think of some shorter races to do in between that aren’t smack in the middle of FL summer.)

M: Run with my fast friend (slower warmup/cooldown miles). Total 6.24 mi / 9:25/mi ave / 64F 94% humidity. I think I did 2 x 20s strides at end.

T: 6 mi relaxed run, 9:51/mi ave, 62F 93% + 30 min strength – Rebecca Kennedy full body

W: Nothing – total rest. (Suggestion of coach to have a day of utter nothingness rather than doing strength on off days, which was my previous practice.)

R: 6.4 mi, 6 mi + 2 x 20s strides at end. 9:51/mi, 63F, 91%. The good weather ended here. I hope that’s not it for the year . . .

F: 5 mi easy @ 10:32/mi, 71F 87%. 20 min strength for runners – Becs Gentry

S: 13 mi long run @ 10:11/mi, 72F and 95% humidity ( <– this was noticeable). Not surprisingly a migraine was triggered. I have been suggested to basically double my gel/calorie intake during these runs so will try that next week and see if headache can be avoided . . .

S: 5 mi easy @ 10:21/mi, 75-80F, 70%

TOTALS: 41.6 mi / 2 x strength

Other things

Low key weekend overall. The kids went to a great bday party at a ranch, and A planned her own bday party + we sent out invites. I took all 3 to Trader Joe’s, my new favorite store that I feel totally ridiculous for neglecting over the past decade.

THEN we went to Office Depot for some poster board and I *did* buy an extra one so that the next time there is a random last minute project announced I will be able to gleefully pull it out.

The kids reenacted Ben Stiller begging for a job (Night at the Museum again).

She kind of looks like an intimidating boss right?

Also, C can make his own omelette. I’d celebrate my freedom from kitchen duties except while that was happening another kid spilled a glass bowl of hot oatmeal all over the floor (and yes, it shattered!). You win some + you lose some . . .

red stuff = diced red pepper

And speaking of win, my dad scored us monument tickets (they are coming for part of this vac + he was smart and chose the ‘group’ option). So, yay.

Wow that omelette looks amazing!! Way to go, C!! Glad you guys scored monument tickets, too. Will be fun to have your parents with you for part of the trip. We tend to travel with my parents when we go on bigger trips like trips to FL. We love having them with and they love the extra time with the boys.

I’m just finally getting back to working after having a nagging cold for over 10 days!

the headache could be triggered by electrolytes imbalances. I used to have those most of my long runs because I sweat a lot and manila is very humid. my coach suggested I try LMNT, and headache gone!!!

    Yay for the monument tickets.

Another marathon thought… You could consider running the Celebration Marathon (https://www.celebrationmarathon.com/) in very early 2024 (usually the 3rd ish week of January). It’s south of Disney, small, extremely flat and typically has good weather. Lots of people from my running group do it every year. I’ve done the marathon once (it’s two loops and there is some boardwalk) and the half once, and have had great races both times.

We have done this one because it is so local to us and it is so well done!!

C’s cooking is incredible! A pal had her kids cooking the other day and I realised I really should see if T will join me. He’s very cautious with things so I’m sure he could manage scrambling an egg, etc.

Smart call on the extra posterboard. I think my mom bought a pack of 20 when I was in middle school. Some might have still been in the cupboard when they moved a few years ago.

We had a birthday party this weekend – much gnashing of teeth beforehand but he had a good time once there, and we got a nice cycle ride during. Dropoff parties are the dream.

We also met some prospective babysitters – a teenager down the road left a note a few weeks back and they came by to meet T. We don’t have massive babysitting needs, but it would be nice if we were in a pinch.

I was getting headaches after my long runs too, but the last few times I have drunk a big glass of Pedialyte afterwards and haven’t had a headache. I think it was something with electrolytes causing the headaches. Pedialyte tastes gross but it seems to work!

I agree with the suggestions about electrolytes during/after long run. You’re obviously getting some with the gel, but I’ve had luck with Nuun or Propel afterwards, or even just swigging out of the pickle jar (I’m the only one who eats the pickles in our house so it’s my territory!). A lot of my friends like Tailwind during the run, too. Hope you find something that works and you can avoid the migraine!

I already do Nuun but after, not during. Might try something else for during …

Or salt tablets? Several of my friends swear by them in the summer. I’m in the Baltimore/DC area, so our summers are very hot and humid (basically like your climate, only our terrible season is shorter!). I had been meaning to try them come this summer since I also haven’t quite mastered the electrolyte thing but I’m injured and not running at all. I think people have to play with the dose to figure out what works, but it seems to make a big difference for some!

I would probably love salt tablets bc I love salt. Ha!

If you love salt, then agree with some of the others about LMNT too. They are quite salty.
