RUN
I got up at 5:30 to run around the monuments (thank you for the route recs!)
BREAKFAST was free (or uhh, included) at our hotel. I would place it solidly in the ‘okay’ range but kids loved the free access to whipped cream and chocolate syrup.
ZOO! After everyone had eaten / showered we headed to the zoo! It was cool weather (50s to start!) and somewhat crowded but not terrible.
Our favorite part was probably the small mammal house!
We had lunch with Lani of Real Life Style fame!!! She was dressed much better than I was, obviously. We ate at Duke’s Counter and it was delicious esp because it was after 2 and we had been walking all day. Annabel and I split a burger + kale salad and there were lots of pickled things.
And then my phone ran out of batteries! Oops. Therefore, I have no pix of:
- My parents coming to meet us!
- Kids hanging out / using up all remaining energy at a playground
- Delicious dinner at Elfegene DC, an Ethiopian restaurant recommended by one of you (it used to be Zenebach apparently which has been around for quite some time). 2/3 kids and all adults loved the cuisine and using the injera as an eating vehicle. G gave it a try and then ate chicken nuggets which they had on their menu for exactly this purpose.
We walked ~7 miles as a family according to my phone — pretty impressive for G especially!
About to run again and hoping my phone lasts the day today!!!

Sarah!! A travel absolute “must have” is a great portable charger!!! I don’t know what I would do without mine. We always bring at least 2 to share on our vacations, and I use mine everyday! With the amount of pictures I take (ha!), my phone’s battery would never last an entire long day out and about. I usually pop it on the charger at lunch in my purse for a while. My husband bought me a nice new one right before Costa Rica- I’ll check which one it is and try to send you the link. 😉
I”m glad you are having a good time! I’m a long-time DC resident (from South Florida) and I love it here.
Somewhat personal question, lol. Do you wash your hair every time you shower after running or does it just always look good?!!
I’m not sure that I’d go so far as to say it always looks good but I do Japanese Straightening every ~5 months so it always looks reasonably passable even with no styling. I definitely shower and wash hair every day! In the FL climate it’s basically just . . . necessary.
I think you looked pretty good, especially for having gotten up so early to run and then going to the most exhausting zoo ever with three kids! Your hair really did look perfect 😂. You forgot to mention my chic BLPA binder from Bloom!
Omg we did the zoo today and either it was significantly less crowded when you were there yesterday or I have a significantly lower tolerance for crowds 😂. We maybe saw half of what we usually do because of lines and my unwillingness to wait in them (given that we are local-ish, I am used to coming down on a cool Sunday morning and sort of having the run of the place for a solid two hours). Glad you guys had a good time! I am already rethinking our “go to a few museums later in the week” plan based on today’s experience so I’m looking forward to reading your recap of your next day or so to see if it will shed light on what we decide to do!!
Maybe I am just used to crowded living in a relatively touristy area. I commented to Josh that it was crowded but nowhere near Disney levels 🙂
This is a fair point. And also makes me want to do Disney less than I already do (and I’m definitely already less than enthusiastic…). I applaud you on your crowd tolerance =) We may try for some off-the-beaten-path museums, though we have already promised Natural History (+butterfly garden) for either Thursday or Friday…perhaps I need to just reaaaaaally lower my expectations and hope for the best! Can’t wait to see what else you guys get up to!
Also: can always check out the museums that are less ‘popular’. I actually thought American History was just as cool as Air & Space and markedly less crowded!
