Off to SD!

May 4, 2023

Against my better judgment I booked the only nonstop flights I could find from South Florida to San Diego, and in both directions they are LATE, including a red-eye to get home.

Tonight I leave at ~8 pm from MIA and arrive at ~10:30 pm in San Diego (1:30 am to my body).

That said, maybe there is something to be said about lengthening the night on the way out to help me get acclimated?

I also was kind to myself and have a light day tomorrow. I have one afternoon meeting but otherwise should have the morning to SLEEP IN, recalibrate, and recover. Saturday the full days begin and I will likely be in sessions most of the day though I plan on taking some time to run.

I was weirdly sad to leave the kids + Josh (I honestly don’t remember that feeling when they were younger!?) but also excited. This is the first time since 2019 I’ve been able to attend an IRL medical conference. I am looking forward to seeing old friends + just hanging out learning/talking clinical stuff. And fine, a few nights of not putting anyone to bed sounds pretty exciting, too! (Children if you are reading this, YES I also will miss you!!!!!)

THINGS IN MY BAG POTENTIALLY OF INTEREST:

2 library books (On Earth We Are Briefly Gorgeous which I will probably finish on my flight, and Maame)

PLANNERS. Yes. My Sterling Ink weekly, Erin Condren monthly (goals/lists), and my Stalogy daily notebook. PLUS an EC lined notebook for note-taking at the conference (they said no phone screen shots of slides! Interesting . . .)

Peanut M&Ms! Purchased at the airport because I needed a fun in-the-air snack.

Clif Shot Bloks. I couldn’t bring gels through security and I refuse to check a bag, so I decided I’d try these instead, as I’m planning on a long run (Sunday).

Will report back from the other coast!

I also have the mix feeling when being away from the family. sad and excitement. I’m going to a work trip soon and can already anticipate the feeling.

For next time, I’m pretty sure you can bring gels through security. I’ve flown with gels to my last 3 races in my carry-on with no issues.

Enjoy the conference! I’ve never been to San Diego, but it sounds like a cool city.

Have a wonderful conference! I went to a three day conference for world language teachers this past March in NYC and was also sad to leave the kids but the feeling of being on the train alone was priceless. And three days of learning was amazing. I plan on attending NECTFL every year-it’s a great way to get out of teaching routine and sharpen your saw so to speak.
Will need to google the planners :))

I obviously need more Diet Coke because I read the title and wondered why you were headed to South Dakota….lol…..

That would be an unusual conference destination though honestly I’ve never been to South Dakota and would kind of be into seeing it!

Omg you need to take your kids to the Black Hills in South Dakota! It’s SUCH a fun family trip destination. Seriously it’s the trip we’ve done that our kids talk about the most! So beautiful too. If you ever go you can have our whole itinerary, lol! I have it typed up. 😁
