Interview Link
Well, this was exciting! Some of you emailed and expressed your surprise to hear me because he had initially mixed up his show notes and I wasn’t mentioned anywhere (but his team fixed it!).
I do feel like I sounded a bit nervous in this interview (because . . . well, I was.). I actually couldn’t really listen after 2-3 minutes, which is not the case with BOBW or BLP. But I’m glad I did it!
HOME
In other news, I’m home. It was a really fun trip and I am grateful I was able to take it, AND I wish I had another day to recover from the red-eye! Josh did great and I am trying to figure out how to get back on Eastern Time ASAP (too late to just avoid sleeping much this morning because I just couldn’t do it.)
Anyway! I will end this brief post because I am catching up on basically everything but here are some pix from Balboa Park – I got to go with my friend (who reads here, hi N!!!!) between the conference ending + my flight and it was awesome to get to actually see something in the city. Seeing old friends was such a highlight, particularly those I trained with/under. Just felt like catching up right where we left off.
AND! I finished Bad Sisters. SOOOO GOOOOOD, recommend 100%.

Love it! There’s a conference in my field that I grumble about every year but every year, I enjoy catching up with pals.
I just listened to this podcast episode and thought you sounded AMAZING. Various times I specifically caught myself thinking: “Wow, SHU is really kicking butt with this.”
awww! that is really really nice and I appreciate it!!
I thought you did so well on the podcast! I was actually thinking that your speaking style had evolved a lot in the last two years since the start of BLP, and I’m not sure if you have intentionally worked on it or just become better and better. I’ve always enjoyed listening to you, but you came across as super confident as well as relatable and inspiring. I’ve always appreciated your fast talking but I think you have slowed down noticeably since BLP episode 1
I also felt Cal was very receptive to your ideas and very respectful and I SUPER appreciated when you did mention the privilege aspect of planning. I also thought you covered things in the interview relating to planning which I hadn’t heard you review before, or maybe just in a different way – and I’ve been reading and listening to you for years.
I’m so so pleased you were a guest on the show – I hope you get some male BLPA attendees soon!
I agree he was extremely nice and respectful! I really did enjoy talking with him. I just thought I sounded a bit anxious (ie much less relaxed/chill than a typical planner review!) but I’m so glad to hear it seemed good from your vantage point.
Definitely didn’t come across as nervous at all. And I agree with Rachel – your speaking style is great and it was all very relatable (and your insights are useful across a broad range of work/family combos).
After years of singing lessons when I was a kid, I especially appreciate how clearly you annunciate your words. My music teacher would circle all the “t’s” and “d’s” to make sure I’d sing them clearly and I HATED it at the time, but turns out it’s a great skill. All that to say, you have a great speaking voice and it’s lovely across all the podcast contexts in which you participate, but I thought this was an especially great guest spot!
Typed my reply zoomed in 4x post eye surgery and meant to write “enunciate” not “annunciate” – though you are great at making announcements, too 🙂
I watched Bad Sisters because you mentioned it…so good!
I don’t usually listen to Carl’s podcast but I will listen to your interview! How cool that you were on his podcast. I imagine that will draw listeners to yours!! I actually hate the sound of my voice. It is like nails on the chalkboard. But I did manage to listen to the episode where Laura interviewed me. At one point in my career, I had to go to presentation training and as part of the training, they recorded us but I couldn’t bring myself to watch it. Then this winter I went through more presentation training and she surprised us and recorded us when we presented something on the fly. And then we all watched the play back together. It was not fun… plus I was working out of a different office and had a crazy busy day so was just not in the frame of mind to be totally focused on this training. But it was helpful to watch it back and see what I was doing that could be improved. But I think/hope the people I present to are not as critical/are more forgiving. Wow, I really went off on a tangent there. 😉
Good luck getting back on EST! Time zone changes are tough. When I travel west I try to stay on CST but that is hard. I had 2 back to back trips to locations in PST in April and had a hard time adjusting when I came back both times even though I didn’t fully adjust to PST.
Same Lisa, I do a decent amount of tv interviews and every once in awhile, I’ll get an invite to the BBC training and I always say no. I think it would make me so self conscious that I’d never open my mouth again. Sometimes producers send me the video so I can see it, and delete it immediately. Wherever I have to record a teams call, I cringe,
I have a strong California accent that 12 years in Scotland/NI hasn’t softened at all, a relatively high voice, moving hands, an expressive face etc. Producers keep booking me so I assume I’m decent at it and that’s enough for me.
Yes clearly you are doing great or they wouldn’t invite you back! I feel similarly about my presentations/client calls. I keep getting asked to do calls so I guess I am doing ok! My frustration with the training is that trainers assume the meetings are formal and have a set agenda but much of the time, they are booked fairly last minute and the client is driving the agenda for the meeting since they requested is. So the trainers want me to have this formulaic approach to presenting on calls but unless I am presenting at a conference, it’s unrealistic to expect so much structure. They had some good feedback for me but I don’t need to be more nervous/in my head!
So glad you enjoyed Bad Sisters! We just started watching Succession and are really enjoying (but only one episode in, so grain of salt). Happy you enjoyed your conference, and hopeful you’ll get back on east coast time soon. You will. 🙂
I can’t believe how much you’re running! I think I may crack 10 miles this week lol. Baby steps.
Omg I LOVED bad sisters. I am actually tired now at 8:26 eastern so hopefully that means I can sleep all night and reset? Hoping.
I loved the interview, Sarah, a very refreshing voice from his normal productivity bros. And good to hear him be quite reflective, I quite like his confessional that home wise, he’s a bit of a mess 🙂 So I felt like you taught him something.
I really enjoyed the episode, too. I didn’t think you sounded nervous, and I thought he sounded more relaxed than he often does as well – more like friends having a conversation than it usually does when he has “friends of the show” on. I get that a large part of his audience is probably single and child-free and that he wants to maintain a certain level of privacy around the workings of his family life, but I’m glad that he also seems to be getting the idea that – for many people – you can’t simply turn off the outside world while you do deep work all day. That an important component of having time to do deep work – or any work at all for that matter – is being able to plan and negotiate through all the responsibilities that exist outside of work and are worth the time to talk about.
Just listened to the pod. You did great! I loved it!
Just listened to the podcast- well done, Sarah. I though you didn’t sound nervous at all, you annunciate beautifully.
I loved this Cal Newport episode – you did a great job!
Sarah, you were fabulous at answering Call Newport’s questions on his podcast! Maybe your participation will not only encourage him to host more women on his podcast but also to be more open about how he and his wife share responsibilities. I have often wondered what Mrs. Cal thinks about her husband’s many activities and if she gets equal time to follow her interests. Maybe you planted some seeds!
aww thank you so much for the note!!! It was a fun interview and he was super nice!
