5 on a Friday: Listen / Read / Watch

June 23, 2023

1- Laura was on Deep Questions this week! I loved listening to them chat (and did so during a hill workout on Wednesday AM).

work vs life . . . or how about both?

2- I was Monica’s guest on About Progress:

My headshots hadn’t come in yet, but it was a fun interview šŸ™‚

3- A little behind the scenes: I think I hit a PR on Thursday for number of podcast episodes/interviews recorded in a day. 2 full BOBW episodes, 1 full BLP episode (including an interview), 1 BOBW intro/Q&A, and 1 BOBW interview for the future. Also, Patreon. Also, a meeting. Also, 4 ads. I am really glad my evening plans do not involve talking.

(I also talk for much of the day seeing patients but it’s different. Though honestly I would not mind a silent retreat soon. I’m SURE the kids would go for that, haaaaaaa.)

4- CURRENTLY READING:

Yes, I’m leaning into the Beach Read genre and no I’m not sad about it

I’m also most of the way through Ann Patchett’s These Precious Days. It’s been a heavy reading week. I sort of want to get to 30 books by the midpoint of the year . . .

5- WE FINALLY FINISHED TED LASSO! And I cried. I really loved that show!! Is there anything out there that’s similarly heartwarming?

I havenā€™t seen it yet but people are saying that Somebody Somewhere with Bridget Everett is also very heartwarming.

Yes! The finale of Ted Lasso was amazing. We have been very impressed with Apple TV series lately. Check out Shrinking!

Have you watched Trying? Also on AppleTV. Iā€™ve been catching up on Somebody Feed Phil (Netflix) and loving it.

Ha, Iā€™m leaving for vacation today and for books I have packed Life in Five Senses (finally got it from the library) and The Kite Runner, plus hopefully finishing up Outlive on Kindle which I have been slowly reading for ages now. Basically the least ā€œbeachyā€ reads ever. Lol!! Oh wellā€¦ next time. šŸ˜‰

We are watching Shrinking, also on Apple TV, following Ted Lasso and itā€™s filling the void for me. Itā€™s funny and heartwarming.

a second vote for Shrinking. Definitely has Ted Lasso vibes

      • Reply Elizabeth June 23, 2023 at 8:39 am

Shrinking has the same writer(s) I believe?

    • Reply Melissa Hall June 23, 2023 at 9:22 am

Another vote for Shrinking. Roy (Brett Goldstein) is one of the writer/creators. I love it so much, maybe even a little more than Ted.

Another for Shrinking – Brett Goldstein and Bill Lawrence (made Scrubs) are creators of both. Also Never Have I Ever – maybe solo show but just the best!! So heartwarming in the coming of age, figuring out yourself and mother/daughter relationship. I’m going to rewatch all seasons with my 7th grader.

Oh my gosh, that final episode of Ted Lasso was pure perfection. Cried big time here too. A wonderful series!!

    • Reply Nadine June 23, 2023 at 7:52 am

Also, not sure whether you can view it in the US, but Mr Inbetween is a fabulous series, a gamut of emotions there too!

I loved Ted Lasso! Another feel good show is Never Have I Ever on Netflix. Itā€™s different but has really great family and friend dynamics. The final season just came out a week or so ago.

  • Reply Emily June 23, 2023 at 10:38 am

Yes, Never Have I Ever is so great!

  • Reply Bri June 23, 2023 at 10:40 am

Have you tried Derry Girls on Netflix? Itā€™s one of my favorites and makes me feel similarly to watching Ted Lasso!

  • Reply Omdg June 23, 2023 at 2:24 pm

Agree with Derry Girls (Dylan liked it too). Never Have I Ever final season came out recently.

    • Reply Omdg June 24, 2023 at 3:35 pm

Oh also tried shrinking and found it meh, boring. To each their own.

Just wanted to say thank you for posting book recommendations! Iā€™m listening to BOBW right now, and I consider you a ā€œbook twinā€! Iā€™ve found many enjoyable books through your blog!!

  • Reply Amanda June 23, 2023 at 6:51 pm

Excited to listen to Laura on Deep Questions! I started ā€œI have some questions for youā€ this week based on your rec and can tell I will enjoy it so thank you! Also loved Ted Lasso – I think Roy Kent is my favorite TV character ever, except maybe Lesley Knope. I assume you have watched Parks and Rec? If not and you liked Ted Lasso you should! I honestly like very few TV shows but Parks and Rec, Schittā€™s Creek (which I know you like) and Ted Lasso are totally my jam.

Also voting for Derry girls and Never Have I Everā€¦love both of those! Started watching Working on Netflix-definitely not Ted Lasso but unique perspective on range of jobs etc. also Brett Goldsteinā€™s podcast: Films to be Buried With is a fun listen and great way to get movie suggestions.

You all are my people! My son just binged Ted Lasso and made me promise to watch it. Love Derry Girls and Parks & Rec. Also get most of my book recommendations from Sarahā€™s book lists!
