Positive Things!

August 22, 2023

School started!

K / 4th / 6th!

No uniforms for 6th grade and up!

Drop off went well, despite traffic and a poorly-timed rainstorm.

I am definitely relieved to be getting back into the regular routine. I’m not sure why I had more angst about this than usual, but maybe I will work on the timing of our vac / camp ending next year.

Barbie!

I finally saw it!! We ended up all going. I figured that any mature content would just fly over G’s head, and it did. I absolutely loved the movie; I laughed out loud several times and also cried. Honestly, I want to see it again (and I will, once it comes out on streaming).

(I admit G has definitely had a steady diet of . . . more grown up movies than either other kids. Not violent; more like Legally Blonde and Stick It when I’ve watched them with A. I don’t see a huge downside but I recognize not everyone is comfortable with this.)

Decluttering: Office Edition

Something came over me this morning (back-to-school-energy I am SURE) and I decided to clean out my office drawers. Not only did I get rid of some tea from 2017 and a bunch of very dried out pens, but I FOUND MY STETHOSCOPE that I had lost ~6 months ago!

I have since replaced it, but it has sentimental value because it’s my original stethoscope from residency (2007 omg).

It wasn’t in the drawer I was cleaning, but it had fallen behind my desk (and I thought I lost it in the hospital — it was during a call week).

Anyway, hooray for decluttering! What other treasures will I unearth!?

I was skeptical of barbie movie until I read a review. Best movie I’ve seen in a very long time. Such an astute reading of our current moment wrapped up in a very delicious pink package. Loved it!! (Tiny Boy and I have an ongoing joke about the Mojo Dojo Cssa Houae) hahah

Haha me too. I might never have seen it had there not been some angry mens rights activists on Twitter complaining about how anti-man it was. Maybe that was just clever marketing?? If so I *totally* fell for it!

I am envious of all of the families with kids going back to school! Paul starts 2 weeks from tomorrow!! But tomorrow is his last day of his summer program. We knew we’d have this 2 week gap when we decided to move him over to the public school program. He will be at my parents lake home next week so at least most of it is covered by them. But I am very ready to get back to a routine. Plus our toddler starts a new daycare next week and my new hire starts in 2 weeks. So lots and lots of change ahead, but all good things.

I am so happy you found your stethoscope! What a reinforcement!

I find that I am much more apt to shield my kids from violence than I am from “se#ual” content. I find the violence much more disturbing, and like the opportunities to have discussions about things that are “mature.” (To a limit of course… there are things their brains are NOT ready for!) This is a really long way of saying — good for you for bringing all of them!

Same for me! I will take all the Kens in our house: husband and 4 sons (10, 8, 7 and 5).

    Well, that’s a nice reward for de-cluttering!
We haven’t seen Barbie yet but I want to. So of course I don’t know specifically what’s in the movie, but I can guess. I think it’s fine to take your youngest daughter- the more mature things will go over her head, and she’s probably much happier to be included in a family activity, than if you excluded her and told her it was too old for her. I guess what I’m saying is that overall I think it’s better for her mental health to see the movie with you!
