Weekend

5 on a Friday: Pretty Things + A Long Shot

September 8, 2023

1- Love this article summary listener Christina sent me: Pencil It In. It’s a quick read, but my summary of the summary is that writing things down in pen (or pencil) is powerful and not to be underestimated.

2- Another listener email reminded me of the planner/notebook/decor company Poketo. HOW cool is this wall calendar? Could even be displayed one quarter (or quintile) at a time!

3- Olivia Rodrigo’s new album is out so now I have a soundtrack for my next speed workout. (Barbie was starting to get a little repetitive . . . though I still kind of love it). Pic from Target’s website – are people buying CDs!? I sort of wish we were all doing that again? Though that is a lot of plastic.

4- THE HOBONICHI PACKAGE CAME!!! 7 days – that is an international shipping RECORD! I did make a video (Annabel filmed) but need to either edit it, or decide it doesn’t need editing. Here’s a teaser:

(Weeks + some accessories are Annabel’s!)

((And yes, I am always ambitious with my planner ordering but these two covers might be my favorites EVER so, I will be using them in some way shape or form.))

5- This weekend is really full – 2 birthday parties, kid activities – gymnastics / piano / soccer game, AND I’m having our local running group over for dinner Saturday (with kids, so it will be chaos but hopefully fun). I’m also on call Monday so will be gearing up for that. I feel ready, though.

LONG SHOT BOSTON READERS: This is a huge long shot, but I have a rather long run scheduled while in the area 2 Saturdays from now. Recs for routes or groups? Are YOU also training for a late fall marathon and want to suffer enjoy these miles with me and happen to be my pace (I said it was a long shot). Ideally will run 18 total with 12 of the miles at marathon pace (around ~8:20).

I hope you find a running buddy for your Boston long run! Even just having someone join you at the start would be fun! I also had luck looking up other running clubs when I visited cities back when I was marathon training. I was part of a club here in Minneapolis and people who were visiting would email and ask if they could join and we loved it! So that might be an option if there is a club close to where you are staying.

Enjoy your busy weekend! The running club get together sounds fun! We have a birthday party tonight, tomorrow is our block party and Paul starts swimming lessons on Sunday! Plus we have gymnastics and the library on sat am. But it’s mostly fun stuff… I am hoping the swimming lesson isn’t awful. We tried doing lessons during the summer of 2021 and he wouldn’t get in the pool. We did a trial lesson a few weeks ago and it wasn’t great but the manager said we have to push through and get him comfortable in the water. She put us in a class with a very experienced teacher during a quiet time at the pool. And at most there are 3 students to one teacher. But ay yi yi. It might be a rough start. :/ But he HAS to learn to swim since my parents live on a lake and he will miss out on so much with friends at pools and such.

You could start at the Boston Marathon finish line and run out if you wanted to!! Or Charles River loops.

Depending on where you’re staying my favorite running spot when I marathon trained was the minuteman trail but easier to access that from the Cambridge side!

I’m here in Somerville until Sept 20th so if you mean Saturday Sept.16th I’d love to run with you. I run both the Charles River loops and the Minuteman bike path and my race pace is 8:30 but happy to do 8:20’s. My marathon is October 8th so perfect timing for me to do some race pace miles in the context of a long run.

Oh it would have been so much fun!

Agree with Charles river loops! Also SW corridor path down to the arboretum in Jamaica Plain gives great views back over the city and some big hills!

I don’t want any big hills, ha! (attempting marathon pace miles and running a flat marathon)

I live in greater Boston and if you are outside the city, have tons of recs for great, long run routes that are quiet and scenic – if you are staying in the city, definitely second Charles River. Hopefully we will be back to our delightful almost-fall weather the weekend you are here!
