J-call weekends really are easier now
I used to dread every weekend Josh was on call — which is anywhere from 1/3 to 1/4, so that’s a lot of weekends (especially since I also dread weekends I am on call . . . ).
Somewhere over the last year or so, this has ceased to be the case. Part of the shift is being able to leave older kids (especially A) home for short stints. Absolute game-changer. And part of it is just the entire crew getting older and becoming less unwieldy overall (though don’t get me wrong – there are still many tough moments!).
Anyway. I just kind of realized this yesterday that I was looking forward to the weekend even with Josh on call and remembered this really wasn’t always the case.
Weekend things
TODAY
✔︎ 20 mile run – went really well this AM!! It wasn’t exactly cool out (76-77F + 90%+ humidity as per usual) but I felt really strong. While I ran, I thought about everyone running 26.2 tomorrow in Chicago! (I also listened to a bunch of podcasts. 20 miles takes a while!!!)
✔︎ (in progress) – gymnastics. I looooove this post-run time slot!
❒ piano – later this afternoon
❒ library – after piano
❒ nap – really hoping to fit this in, I got up early!!
❒ dinner – probably some of takeout . . . not sure what though!
TOMORROW
❒ yoga / barre (after sleeping in, hopefully!)
❒ groceries (TJs probably)
❒ C – soccer game (with assigned snack-bringing duties, at least I’m gettting it over with!)
❒ kid play date (C’s friend, they will probably be on VR headsets the whole time but I guess it’s fun to do it together?)
❒ bake something / make dinner
❒ prep for week
Nothing too exciting but we have plenty of action ahead so it’s nice to have a ‘regular’ weekend! Will probably read a bunch of Tom Lake throughout.

that’s a solid and fast 20 miler! well done! I will see how running for 4 hrs without music/podcast goes tomorrow… something that i forgot to practice.
I am planning to wear one headphone in my race – it’s a small race (under 1000 runners I think) and I don’t think against the rules though will check!
And GOOD luck tomorrow. You got this!!!!
thanks!!!
Good luck tomorrow, Coco!
You too!
I did 6.2 mi at 11:20 pace which is the farthest and fastest I’ve gone since June. It was also 45 degrees out and sunny with a light breeze, so basically perfect. Now I am planning on lying around and reading/napping before we take the dog to school and go downtown (Detroit) for dinner. You’re right, it is much easier with big kids. I used to feel more tired at the end of the weekend than before when I was in residency, and that’s saying something.
10K! Jealous of your weather!!!!! Read/nap combo is truly the best.
It was in the low 50s this morning so my run felt extra nice. I hope you get cooler race weather. It can make such a huge difference. You did great on your 20 miler!!
We had a family PTA event at Paul’s school this am. It was a little chilly and I regretted not wearing gloves/having the boys wear mittens. I hope our weather warms up a bit again. It’s been a drastic change from 80-90s to highs in the 50s!!
What a strong 20 miler! After a shakeout run this morning, I’ve been enjoying carb loading and watching football. So excited to run tomorrow! I’m here with a group of 30 from my running group, so that makes it extra fun. I’m with you, Sarah—I like having one headphone so I at least have the option to listen to music. For my race last month I listened to an all-Taylor Swift playlist, and I loved every minute of it!
T Swift for 26 miles is not a bad idea :). Have a fantastic time tomorrow!!!!!!
