Treat Day!
Yesterday was the grand finale of BLP at Home: Planning 2024 so I decided to celebrate a bit. I ended up with a treat trifecta:
- a massage (tried a new place very close to my house that was reasonably priced — it was good and I would return! It wasn’t super high ambience or ‘fancy’ but any massage is luxury as far as I’m concerned.
- a DQ oreo blizzard. I think Gretchen Rubin specifies “healthy treats” but I guess one can decide what is healthy in any given context. I would say if one is going to feel guilty or bad afterwards, then I can see why avoiding this kind of treat makes sense. I personally felt zero guilt and only happiness while enjoying this treat, which I did sans kids and with a podcast on (Pantsuit Politics if you must know). (Note: I am a steadfast moderator when it comes to food but a total abstainer when it comes to social media, so I know different strategies work best for different people AND different things, so not saying Gretchen is wrong in general — I just find occasional sugary treats to be fine for me!)
- a walk with a friend. I met my Boca friend Amanda at a park between us and we took a walk and caught up. Skincare and stationery were (as usual) part of our discussion, haha.
Despite all that I did work a decent amount (recorded a podcast with Kae among other things!) and had a work meeting (basically our big healthcare system required quarterly meeting) to attend from 5-7pm so I’m really glad I was able to fit in these treats. They helped me give myself recognition for finishing a big project and felt celebratory and fun.
January Goals List Check In:
Okay, time to get real and see how things are going with ~1 week left in the month!
(I still maintain the month felt much shorter than it actually was due to vac –> call –> recovery)
PERSONAL:
❐ Go to yoga once: Nope, but I have some more flexible days coming up and have identified a local studio that I could try. So still possible.
✔︎ Get work shoes. Ordered!!! Thanks to Lani finding the last pair on earth in my size, I ordered these! One reader did note they are not the world’s most comfortable but I actually don’t walk that much at work on a non-call week. So I figure they are worth trying to see if they reach the comfort level needed for an oupatient work day (or date night). My boots/booties are all >5 yrs old and look pretty beat up and dated at this point. Aside from one pair of platform boots which were very cute but almost instantly ripped and became unusable, I have not purchased shoes in forever!
❐ Dry cleaner. This is to get my new wide leg jeans hemmed (and get a few sweaters cleaned). Going tomorrow!
✔︎ Habit of focus: Media Tracking + Journaling –> 100% consistent with these!
RELATIONSHIPS:
✔︎ (well, assuming nothing messes it up). One date night: coming up! Can’t wait!
❐ Book two date nights in Feb: Not yet done because Josh still doesn’t have a final call schedule. Hopefully soon though!
❐ 1:1 time with 1 kid/week: I have had some with A and tonight plan on C so maybe I can squeeze in G next week. This is harder to orchestrate than one would think.
HOME:
❐ Work on decluttering G’s room + start C’s room. NOPE. I have not had the time to do this, truly. MAYBE I’ll get started with a portion of G’s room this weekend.
❐ Have one estate planning meeting (with Josh, not our attorney). Well, it’s this weekend or not happening so maybe (?) we can at least take the documents out and kind of . . . start.
CLINCIAL WORK:
❐ Clean out office: My office appears very organized but there are definitely things here I NEVER use/look at just taking up space. At this point, I have very little need to keep anything *paper* in my work office. Perhaps today I can do a 20 minute blitz of putting things in the shredder.
❐ Clean up dot phrases (shortcuts in EPIC). Sigh. Maybe next Weds, which is my most flexible clinical day. (Is that still January? Looks like yes! Okay, adding to planner.)
CREATIVE WORK:
❐ 2 podcast pitches: Nope! I truly have not had time to do this. Every non-clinical day has been booked, mostly with ‘active’ presenting type tasks. But Thurs and next week I should have more ‘back end’ time.
✔︎ Record one guest ep: YES! And I actually have another one booked for next Tuesday so I’ll have February’s guest ep done ahead of time.
✔︎ Spend Wednesday scheduling out the next two days of creative work: Yes, I think I’ve done this to the extent possible. I already know what I’m working on Thurs + next Tues.
Okay clearly I have my work cut out for me the next week or so.
(AND I am find with migrating some of these to February! Not aiming for perfection here.)

I know I should be more excited about the boots, but DQ blizzards are the best treat!!! And the massage of course. When I could eat real ice cream, I would get the teeny tiny size once in a blue moon and be completely happy with it. Tropical flavor :)? What’s your poison?
Oreo or Reese’s – this time I got Oreo!
Good choice! As a public service announcement, I will let your readers know that they do make gluten-free Oreos, and they are amazing!
What kind/style of work pants do you usually wear (that you’ll be wearing with those booties)?
I have exactly two pairs of work pants in rotation right now: a slightly cropped version of this — https://www.marinelayer.com/collections/gals-pants-1/products/full-length-raw-edge-bridget-pant-in-cream?variant=40349152673866 and https://www.marinelayer.com/collections/gals-pants-1/allison
(yes I tend to pick one store and just only shop there for a period of time, this past couple years it was ML)
I want to wear them with the wide leg pants AND also jeans. (And eventually get more pants I guess is a step as well, lol. Mine are all SO OLD). I wear FIGS scrubs most days so I don’t need a ton but 2-3 decent outfits would be great.
This sounds like a great day! I’ve been considering the wide leg jeans you posted since that post! As a fellow elder millennial, I have to ask – how short are you hemming them? And what shoes will you wear with them?
I still can’t quite figure out the winter shoe situation with the slightly cropped wide leg jeans that are everywhere!
I love these goals round ups. We got hit with covid on 1 January, and things have been wild ever since, so I’m also confused how it is nearly the end of January. I had 5 priorities for the month – 2 are getting pushed to next month, but 1 (the submission of an article) is complete minus the abstract, the other 2 are getting there.
Lifewise, my MIL is here this weekend/into next week so I’m hoping I’ll get a bit of time to tackle a house project while she’s playing with T. My son’s aftercare put up a sign saying they want toys/art supplies if anyone is having a clear out so the art table is my plan for the weekend, as is putting all the artwork we are keeping in presentation pockets so they can go in the bookshelf versus the plant pot (???) they are currently shoved in.
I bet you could pay a kid a few bucks to shred? That feels like a nice delegating task. We get so little on paper, just our life insurance and the occasional flyer. I rip up and put in the compost bin.
I also need new work shoes… but while I’m good at buying sneakers (I am hard on my shoes), anything else is annoying. I tried to do the right thing and take my work boots for repair when the zip split but now we are going on 6 weeks and they still aren’t back? And all my meetings are in other locations rather than the office, so I do this awkward swap from my duck boots to my ballet flats in various governmental / university lobbies. I’m pretty minimalist but this is perhaps a sign of how a second pair of boots is a good idea.
I have the same booties in black and they’re great. Not the kind of shoes you want to wear if you’re on your feet all day (heel + narrow toe box) but they are perfect for your typical office day.
That’s what I figure! I don’t plan to walk miles in them but I think for an outpatient day they would be fine.
Love the booties! Very cute :). Could you ask the person who helped organize A’s room to come back and work with C and G? It might even be more “fun” for them getting to do it independently with someone who isn’t mom or dad.
she might come!! I don’t know if the younger 2 will be as easy to work with but we can try!!!
