Savoring a Normal Day

February 22, 2024

Things savored yesterday:

50 degree weather on a run (with running friends). I wore leggings which is such a rarity (though I did end up ditching my long sleeved top, so it was long pants + a tank). BUT STILL.

A full but manageable work day — the afternoon looked a bit daunting (lots of new-to-me patients on my schedule) but everything was done and inbox cleared by 5 pm.

Takeout lunch (this is my current Wednesday tradition) — I almost always order from this place (close to my office) and it comes SOOOO fast. I ate while reading blogs as is my Wednesday practice as well! Few highlights: Laura’s Disney adventures, HRG’s trip to Morocco, poor Jenny’s ankle injury, and Iuteal phase emotions form someone than me — appreciate this as it makes me feel less alone!

A 20 minute walk outside before my afternoon patient block started – the weather was GORGEOUS and I was antsy so a little walk (with Tim Ferriss/Cal combo as podcast soundtrack) was just what I needed.

Driving home with All Songs Considered Alt Latino mix (good music AND sort of counts as Spanish practice as I attempt to understand some of the lyrics)

After work, I was home with A & G while C had soccer and both were in good moods overall. G played happily doing a puzzle (her own idea) while singing along to the Wonka soundtrack for quite some time. The kids are NOT frequently drawn to quiet activities like this very often so it was a joy to see. And her singing was super cute.

she did eventually finish

Lying down at 8:45 to read. I made it through a whopping 4 pages of Covenant of Water — so like ~0.5%, haha — but was just too tired and made the executive (and luxurious) decision to just go to bed.

I scrolled way less than I had been (daily total: 84 minutes – top 5 –> texting, safari, Duolingo, WhatsApp, google sheets) and I do think it helped me to just . . . pay attention to my day more and appreciate the positive moments! (Side note: I also notice that my kids are consistently better behaved when I consciously avoid my own phone overuse, probably because they are getting the attention they need/crave AND because I can better anticipate their needs).

((Side note #2: Sometimes I find my structured clinical days easier in a way because my goals are just so clear. Trying to bring more of this focused energy to today — 2 podcast interviews, 1 call, and some writing work!))

If you haven’t tried Focusmate yet, I find that it really helps to structure the day and focus me on specific projects at/for specific times.

I went to bed at 8:50 on Tuesday night, and I might make it a recurring thing. I am a much nicer person still 2 days later. Early Bird Tuesdays, perhaps.

Wow – I would LOVE to do this. My husband and I are opposites – I’m a morning person and he’s an evening person. We generally watch an hour long show together at night and then I head up to bed around 9:30-10. Without fail, he’s waiting in bed after I brush my teeth, etc because he wants to spend time with me (no not like that!). DUDE – I just watched tv with you so it prolongs my bedtime for 20-30 min and then I feel like a jerk because at the end it’s GO AWAYSO I CAN SLEEP. Very rarely will he let me go to bed when I want/need. He hates being alone. Sigh….marriage!

Maybe you could discuss having a day or two a week where you go to bed earlier? This sounds … kind of unfair!

I always feel more in tune to these types of simple daily pleasures whenever we get home from traveling. Like, vacation is great but I really love my normal life, too! Which I suppose is a very good thing since my year has many more normal life days than vacation days. 😄

Also reevaluating my phone use. Today I had 1 hour on Google maps! In NYC for a conference so I had to use them a lot. Which way is uptown? Downtown? I don’t know, thank god for Google maps.

Google maps is always a good use of the phone in my book!
