5 on Friday: Random Fun Stuff Edition

June 21, 2024

1- Very interesting episode of 10% Happier on GLP-1 agonists with (sometimes controversial) author Johann Hari:

I wasn’t surprised by much in this episode, but I appreciated his honesty and vulnerability. Definitely worth a listen.

2- Olympic Trials!!! I’m super excited for the Olympics this summer (July 26 – Aug 11), but definitely plan on catching some Trials competitions too, specifically in track (starts 6/21) and gymnastics (starts 6/27)! I feel like this is the first round of the Summer Olympics that I will be able to focus on without really little kids making it hard to watch as a family. I guess a lot changes in 3-4 years!

A is especially excited to watch gymnastics with me this time around for obvious reasons. I am psyched!!!!

3- Currently reading: Not going to lie — I bought The Sicilian Inheritance in part to get free access to Jo Piazza’s substack (which is funny, because I am not really a substack person. I have hers and Laura’s and that’s it!). I guess it was a smart marketing plan. I’m just over halfway and it’s a fun ride, in part because the sense of place (Sicily, obvs) is so strong.

4- PLANNER THINGS! Ashley Shelly is selling all of her 2024 planners for $10 if you want to try them out, and Cloth & Paper just released their 2025 (!) inserts!

I plan to continue using my C&P as a catchall goal planner of sorts, so I don’t need regular weekly inserts but I definitely want some annual planning pages and other things.

5- Are anyone else’s tweens obsessed with Sabrina Carpenter all of the sudden? Not going to lie, that “Espresso” songs is insanely catchy. And now it’s in my head again . . .

The gymnastics olympic trials are here in Minneapolis so I am extra excited. I so badly wanted to go but the ticket prices were insane and I could not justify spending that much money when I can just watch it on tv and probably have a better viewing experience. I am definitely most excited about gymnastics out of all of the sports with 2nd being track and field!

I am so in the dark on new and exciting artists because I don’t have older kids and we do not listen to the radio. When I am in the car with the kids, we exclusively listen to Taylor Swift. One of her older songs was playing at the zoo when I was there with my 6yo this week and he was like – hey, this is Taylor Swift! I was kind of impressed that he could recognize her voice!

Thanks for alerting me about the Trials- I LOVE the Olympics and am so excited about them, but I keep missing things (I think i missed the swimming trials?)
Johann Hari was also on Rich Roll’s podcast discussing his experience with Ozempic- I didn’t listen to the episode but I heard a lot about it. Interesting topic!

Yes, also looking forward to the Olympics! My kids just turned 7 and 4, and I didn’t even think about watching the summer event with them last time. They started gymnastics about 6 months ago, and my 4-year-old son is trying out a bit of soccer, so I think those will be fun and inspiring for them to watch. And we’ll probably watch swimming and whatever else works well with the time difference. It’s nice to have something that much of the world rallies around during what feels like an especially turbulent time (though people probably say that during every Olympics installment).

We’ve been watching the swimming Olympic trials this week and it has been super fun! Thanks for the reminder about track and gymnastics next week!

I’m excited to watch the track trials! I’ve been following Allie Ostrander on YouTube for a while and am excited to see how the steeplechase goes for her.

The Olympic Trials are always so exciting. Between that and the European Soccer Championship, I am watching more sports than usual 🙂

You mentioned your Cloth and Paper planner for a catch all for your goals and such. What C&P cover/size do you use and what inserts are most helpful for what you are trying to capture? Sometimes I get overwhelmed when I go to the website and there is so much to choose from. Perhaps I don’t really know where to start. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

It is a half letter size!! This is perfect for me. Plenty of space without being bulky. I really just need monthly calendar pages, the monthly planning pages, and I love the bibiophile inserts for reading tracking plus some extra blanks and a yearly calendar page is nice too!

I actually did use the weekly inserts from about May – now but that was just a temporary fun thing. They did work but I prefer to have a separate weekly planner!

Thank you for the heads-up on the Ashley Shelley planner sale. I was not feeling inspired by the 2024 planner I had chosen, so it was great to get a new Daily layout in time to start on July 1. It looks awesome and I can’t wait to start filling it up.
