Higher Mileage Week

It was hot this week. Well — truthfully there is not much variation here in weather over the summer. I guess that’s SORT of a good thing – we’re unlikely to have 100 degree days. But every morning is ~80ish and every high is ~90ish and the humidity is always high. Might as well just accept it!!

October is somewhat better, so hey — less than ~2.5 months of the worst part to go!

M: 9 mi @ 9:02/mi with Jacy – extra early because I did camp drop-off! We were done by ~6:20 which was great.

T: Super fun workout! 2 mi warmup (9:16/mi) then 5 x (30 / 60 / 90s with 1 min rest in between), 2 min rest between sets. These were supported to be 10K pace effort and I was a little bit all over the place, anywhere from 6:40/mi to 7:45/mi. It went really quickly and felt fun, though and unlike other recent speed workouts in the heat I didn’t have to walk between intervals so that nice. Total 8.2 mi @ ~9:00/mi overall.

Later that day I did 30 min Full Body Strength with Rebecca Kennedy (Peloton).

W: Relaxed run, 9 mi @ 9:54/mi ave

R: Relaxed run with strides (felt EXTRA hot this day for some reason), 9 mi total @ 9:50/mi ave and later that morning I went to a (live, in person) yoga class! It was a vinyasa class that I would classify as low-to-moderate intensity which was pretty much perfect. Great stretching and a bit of upper body strength mixed in.

F: 7 mi @ 9:02/mi

S: 16 mi, 9:32/mi ave. This felt like a bit of a slog – I was SOOO hot by the end (and it was 85F out when I got home). I did drink a ton of LMNT!!

S: 45 min strength with Callie (Peloton) – Day 1 of the 3-day split, Back / Biceps / Legs. Callie is by far my favorite strength instructor. This was hard enough AND not boring. I forgot how good she is!!

TOTAL:

58.2 mi running / strength x 2 / yoga x 1

Reading Right Now (and really enjoying!)

Currently reading:

Swan Song by Elin Hilderbrand — predictably, I am devouring this and am halfway through already. IT’S SO GOOD!!!!!!

You Only Die Once by Jodi Wellman — also loving this. The tone is very light/chatty/jokey (not always what I want in this kind of book) but the actual content really makes me think. I really like this book!

(Put aside for Elin — The Mother Act by Heidi Reimer — I was enjoying this but I can renew it; I can’t renew Swan Song so I’m pivoting for now!)

My long run last weekend was on a Florida-like morning and we didn’t have power due to storm so I came back to a hot house. It was rough! But drier air arrived this week so my 7.5 mile run was about 1,000x’s better!

I just finished ‘Wandering Souls’ last night. I wish I knew how it ended up on my hold list but there isn’t a way to note that on Libby (that I am aware of). It’s a slim novel at just over 200 pages about Vietnamese refugees. I gave it 5 stars. Next I will read Claire Lombardo’s sophomore novel, ‘Same as it ever was’. I loved her debut so am hoping this one is as good!

FL like morning in Minnesota – crazy!!! I am glad for you that this is an anomaly 🙂 I didn’t love Claire Lombardo’s first but I know I am in the minority on that one (and maybe I should revisit – could have been a “just not the right time” thing for me. I DNF’d it!!!)

Yes, that’s the way I feel about the Florida summers. It’s going to be hot every day, very little variation, so there’s no point in complaining. I think in a way it’s better than being up north, because at least we’re acclimated to the heat. When they get a “heat wave” everyone freaks out. For us, it’s just life.
Nice week of running! 10K pace is somehow the hardest pace to figure out. I could also probably happily live the rest of my life without running another 10K race- i used to like them but now it just seems like a weird distance.
And- you did your strength training! It sounds like Peloton classes are the answer (at least for now.) When I did Peloton, I used to love Dennis’s yoga classes, in case you want to try one of those.

Yes, at one point I just reached acceptance – if I want to run outside here I just need to be at peace with it being hot!!! Better than hoping for a temperature miracle every day. (Though that would be nice, it’s not happening this time of year!!)
