On the docket this weekend:
- A’s first bat mitzvah party to attend as a guest! I am wrapping my head around the fact that these parties end at like 11 pm. Thankfully, this one isn’t that far from our house and I don’t think Josh is quite as horrified by this time frame, so he will probably pick up! (Fun fact: she was going to get her nails done with gel but then realized this is verboten in the gymnastics world for meets. Apparently it’s an automatic deduction. I don’t quite understand gymnastics culture yet!)
- BLP at Home (Saturday edition). I love teaching this course and the time flies by, plus prompting others to plan makes me think about my OWN plans which is fun!
- Out to dinner with Josh / C / G while A is at her party.
- ~8 mi “long” run in sub-50F weather! A rare treat.
- CLEANING OUT of the kids’ backpacks. An essential January back-to-school practice.
- Baking banana bread or muffins this AM because for once we have uneaten bananas. (Seriously this is rare and I’m excited! Will have to work around the fact that we are out of regular flour. We do have whole wheat + almond though.)
- Reading more of my book club book. Which I don’t love. But I am reading it as fast as I can because I feel motivated to get to The Wedding People. I know I want to abandon more books but I’m not excited about doing that for a book club book when I haven’t been to book club in months! (Seems like poor form to finally show up, having only read 25% of the book!?).
- Finishing up my “large scale” planning trifecta by doing my January Monthly planning! It is tough when the year / season / month coincide. I am done with annual and seasonal (and yes, the endless Goals Series here will continue!) but need to define what will actually happen this month. BIGGEST ITEM is finishing my book draft. YES FINISHING! AHHHH! (I have the last chapter, intro, and conclusion left to write. Unfortunately these seem like three very hard parts.)
Q1 GOALS
Excited about these! I went through my own Planning By Season workbook yesterday (in cute A5 size, loving it) and I have to say, I really do love my own system (ha!). I did an Ideal Week and finished with finalizing Q1 goals. These are below (with a few redacted for privacy) . . .

I just finished The Wedding People and the hype is legit! Enjoy 😊
What is your book club book? I will try my best not to abandon a book club book. I slogged through our January read and was so happy when it was done. I hope we have not overhyped The Wedding People. It I was so so good. But the cover is all wrong. It makes it look light and fluffy and it really isn’t. There is levity but it’s not a light read.
I am here for the goal posts! Even though I am weird about goals, I love reading about others’ goals!
Enjoy your rare cooler run! It is very cold here so I will be doing CG workouts until the weather is more mild (subzero windchills/highs in the single digits to teens – burrr)!!!
It’s called (redacted I’ll email you!). Not a fan, the writing seems really amateur and sloppy to me and the themes feel so heavy handed, characters one dimensional and annoying. lol I was trying not to be neg! Decided not to include title bc I don’t want to skewer an author in public!
Can you tell me too? We tend to like opposite books… so maybe it will be a winner for me. I’ll at least add it to my tbr! I finished the Ruth Ozeki book I was reading yesterday (Tale for Time Being — I enjoyed it! I enjoy most of her books, actually!) and was trying to decide what to read next and picked up the Elizabeth Stoudt book you didn’t like. Reluctantly because you said it dragged, but I had already bought it… I think because you said you were reading it… I just wasn’t in the mood for the Ann Patchett book sitting in my tbr. I’m 10% in and have been enjoying it quite a bit… haha. I even stayed up an extra 30 minutes last night because I didn’t want to put it down. 🙂
It’s taken me many years to learn that we all can like and dislike different books and that’s ok! It doesn’t really mean anything other than that people who like each other can still have different tastes! There’s a guy at work I enjoy talking about books with, but he also likes totally different things from me. It still brings me joy to listen to him talk about why he loved whatever book he’s into lately, even if I know I probably won’t like it myself.
This is all to say even your negative reviews have value for me. I do hope you don’t choose to censor yourself!
haha yes I will email!! but with details I’m not sure you will want to TBR it! I liked Ozeki’s Book of Form and Emptiness, didn’t read the one you did yet!
Libby (audiobook) is the best for bookclub books that aren’t my fav…I try to get the physical book and audiobook from the library when I can (takes planning)…I hate listened to Oryx and Crake (Atwood) and know I would never have finished the book otherwise. Good luck!
good suggestion!! I am not a big audiobook person but you’re right can be a good “just gotta get this read” instrument! (not that I should feel THAT much obligation about a book club book, lol!)
Plz text me the booook!
Also, Cooper went to his first bar mitzvah party and it was pretty awesome and adorable to see him taking his appearance so very seriously. Dorothy just got her last mani/pedi before dance season. Last year she could do pedis, but this year she has a barefoot dance (lol), so I totally get it.
awww so cute!!!
Ha, now I’m so curious about the book. I can see why you don’t want to trash it publicly. I’m pretty sure you’ll like The Wedding People though! I just finished it.
Omg the weather. Can it stay like this all the time???
I want to know the book, too! Please??
I also read and liked The Wedding People, but unlike so many here I only liked it, I did not love it. I didn’t think the writing was as good as it could have been, maybe? I don’t know why it wasn’t a top read for me. I see I gave it 5 stars on good reads but I think it’s really a 4.5. So very good but not one I go around recommending. Totally agree that the cover, while great, feels wrong for the book.
Ones I did absolutely love included The God of the Woods, Here One Moment, We Solve Murders, the Last Devil to Die, Lies and Weddings, Sandwich, The Postcard, The Covenant of Water, The Frozen River, The Running Grave, and A Place to Hang the Moon. NF that I loved were Meditations for Mortals and Ina Garten’s memoir (which I listened to and she reads herself which is a JOY), Life: My Story through History (Pope Francis), The Anxious Generation.
BOOKS!!!! They can be the best.
Forgot about Sandwich! I really liked tithe too!! Definitely planning on the Ina Garten memoir!
