Home Stretch: Various Updates As We Approach the Finish Line of Q2

May 27, 2025

(Quintile 2: Spring break to end of academic year.)

I started my summer reading! I bought the MMD guide and kicked off my reading already with Kevin Wilson’s Run for the Hills. LOVE IT (about 60% done). This bodes well! And my library holds are starting to come in.

Of the 35 titles in the guide, 19 were appealing to me. I don’t plan on reading all 19 but will just let the library holds lists determine my fate (and will purchase some if I am super excited about them and don’t want to wait – I bought this one).

I’m watching Sirens on Netflix (I was SOOOO itchy from the beach bug bites I sustained on Saturday that I needed a totally mindless distraction) and while I feel it is SUCH a White Lotus knockoff, I’m not that mad about it. Josh and I are also watching The Pitt (Max) and Murderbot (Apple). This is probably the most TV I’ve had going at once in years.

C starts lacrosse this week. And soccer ended last week. So that was sort of anticlimactic! But that’s okay. It’s just 2 weekdays per week for 1 hour so not a super intense/high commitment activity. A & G have the 2 more weeks of dance rehearsals before The Showcase. Once school ends, our activites will not stop but we won’t have any more super late ones. I will welcome that immensely!

I am still dong the HCOTF calendar for most of my workouts (I do the two “lower days”, the two “upper days”, and fill in the other days with yoga and/or barre of my own choosing). And I like it! I may transition to some of the “splits” later in the summer — basically workouts that you repeat weekly and try to increase the weight over a period of time. The Rebecca Kennedy splits get high marks, and others love the one from Jess Sims.

On a somewhat related note, lots of eating-related content in the blogosphere lately (Lisa; Kae; Jenny). I have definitely changed my eating habits since March because . . . well, I am not running 50 mpw anymore (more like 0!) and I am on a beta blocker (this can cause weight gain, I assume by lowering resting metabolic rate). Thankfully I have also been a lot less hungry and my Invisalign is also a helpful snack deterrent. I haven’t had a graham cracker since race day, lol. I definitely do not eat low carb or follow any specific rules but just trying to generally eat healthy and get used to fueling like an adult focused on long-term health rather than an endurance athlete.

Speaking of Jenny . . . JENNY SIGHTING ALERT! At one of my fave places too, the Boca REI. (We go ~yearly before an outdoorsy trip and it always feels festive!). I had some planner stuff to share, so we arranged a quick meetup to pass along the goods.

7 days left of school and then we go on our vac! I’m super excited and feel like this “turnaround” of our summer travel is going to be great. I actually *don’t* feel like I’m “limping to the finish line” like in some prior years, but . . well, maybe ask me in a week.

You saw Jenny! I know this was in the works and I’m so glad it happened!

Hooray for not limping. I feel like I’m somewhere in between? Not sure what that is…walking, but definitely not running and with a pronounced hunch in my back – haha.

Really? You saw Jenny by chance? Wooo! Serendipity!
I was curious how not running affects your appetite. To me if I stop running for few weeks I lose appetite for sure. The good part is not ever have to deal with hunger which is not fun.

That was fun and I got to see your family, especially my favorite “name twin”, G. I’m going to sit down tomorrow (my day off) with the new Summer Playbook, and I’m excited.
Honestly, when I saw you on Sunday I was struck by how TINY you are (and I mean that in a good way). I think you’re just naturally petite, and don’t have to worry about gaining weight. It sounds like your body has naturally adjusted, appetite-wise, for not running all those miles.
    Have a great trip!!!

I am definitely limping across the finish line more than usual this year. BUT our last day is Thursday and Friday morning we leave for Costa Rica! So I am looking forward to an abrupt and fun pivot. We always tend to travel the first week of vacation because there are so few summer camps in our area during that first week–they all start the second week. This may change in future years because my kids (11 and 12) are aging out of traditional day camps so maybe next year we’ll do more of a midsummer trip which I think has its advantages too. I am excited to hear you like the new Kevin Wilson book–it’s on my library holds list and I’m eagerly awaiting it. I just watched the first ep of Sirens and it was enjoyable.

Not quite limping across the finish line but like Elisabeth, slightly hobbled. And we’ve got 5 more weeks of school and 2 weeks of summer juggle before I’m on annual leave. But I have carved out some time for more reflective work – currently on a break from reading something a bit tangential to my core project, while sitting in a cafe. My days are a bit less regimented. And my dad is here so I’ve got a week off the school run – as my dad likes nothing better than taking his grandson to and from school, and home via the park, and a snack. Just need to get back to yoga.

I’m about to pick up Deep Cut from the library, which feels like it would be up your ally, generationally and as someone who loves music. Excited to start reading it tonight.

Fellow peloton strength fan here. I don’t follow any specific plan but create my own calendar. Have you tried any classes with Katie (she’s newer to strength)? She is my new fave.
