Reading Weekend Work

5 on a Friday: Dark Media + Life Reflections

October 23, 2026

1- Was just reflecting on our schedule this fall. It has been REALLY REALLY FUNCTIONAL I have to say! Things I love:

  • my Wednesday night Pilates / A pickup combo
  • NO ONE having anything on Friday other than G’s piano lesson (at our house, so it’s not a big deal)
  • A generally having dance 7-9 most nights so we sort of shift into a routine (Monday / Tuesday / Thurs she has this, with Weds a longer session at gymnastics)
  • picking G up from dance after work on Thursdays; I enjoy this time together. She always bursts into the car filled with stories from the day
  • our division of labor in the mornings, and my Monday/Thrusday gym mornings! In a really good workout groove — MON leg day #1 at gym, TUES upper at home, WEDS Pilates, THURS leg day #2 at gym, FRI nothing/yoga, SAT upper at home (or maybe gym depending on what is going on), SUN Pilates.

Sometimes the pieces feel awkward and bumpy but this particular season is just working out really nicely. Deserves recognition I feel!

2- Sometimes it’s nice to read a SHORT book. The last few novels I’ve read have been pretty monstrous – 400-500+ pages each. Not necessarily super complex, but long nonetheless, with Fellowship Point weighing in at close to 600.

This book is super short (and I am soooo excited to discuss it in book club. I’m about 20 pages from the end but I can already say it is a very unique and thought-provoking read.

I recommend it, but it is quite dark and dystopian (not always my favorite trope, but the details are vague enough that it didn’t trigger me too much).

short but mighty

3- Music pick of the week: Dopamine Chamber by Fontaines DC. Think: Depeche Mode mixed with a little bit of Radiohead, but modern. Definitely a DARK MOODY OCTOBER pick.

Pitchfork gives it a 7.8, for whatever that’s worth

I also listened to Zach Bryan’s EP a few times. I don’t entirely get his appeal though, not going to lie! I know he has his superfans so I was curious.

4- Who has seen You Can See Everything? I’m dying to see it (followed all of the Theranos drama back in the day and loved Bad Blood) AND I’m having trouble finding a time slot because the next couple of weekends feature a lot of call among other things. Maybe November 8, unless Josh and I boldly go on a weeknight or something!?

5- Headed into a call weekend and the list looks pretty darn busy but reminding myeslf — hey, it’s just 2 days. It will be okay! I have already told Josh I need to be coddled (lol) and will be leaning into shortcuts like takeout and grocery delivery. After this, I have one Sunday to cover (next week) and then that’s it until Christmas week! I know it will feel amazing on Monday and I’ve planned a reasonably light/restorative day. SO: let’s do this.

I agree- sometimes it’s VERY satisfying to read a good, short book. I haven’t read that one although of course I’ve heard all about it. I had kind of given up on it because I felt like I heard TOO much about it- but now I’m intrigued again. I’ll probably read it at some point.

    Good luck with call weekend!

I am dying to see the Elizabeth Holmes documentary! I too was fascinated by Theranos. I still remember hearing her interviewed on NPR while I was driving to work one morning and being intregued but also skeptical. Anyway, at nearly 3 hours it’s hard to find a slot fo rthe movie to fit into the next couple of weeks. My husband is going on a Thursday night but I will never stay awake through 3 hours on a Thursday.

Isn’t the documentary like 3h or something? I want to see it too, but I think I will wait until is on streaming so I can watch it from the comforts of my couch. Other short book recs: Anything by Claire Keegan, and also The English Understand Wool. The latter one is especially good and is the only book I have read twice basically… ever, because the ending is just so fantastic. Good luck with your call!

I also want to see doc but will wait. That’s too long! But also feel like I’ll need someone to talk to about it. And agree on your short book recs, love both options and agree short and sweet can be so satisfying at times.

My husband and I went to a 9pm showing on a weeknight. It was great, but I probably would have enjoyed it more at an earlier showing!

I just saw it! Try not to read about it before you go. There’s so much to talk about!!!

oh that’s so funny! I finished last night I didn’t feel mad. I mean maybe slightly unsatisfied . . but not mad 🙂

I loved “A Psalm for the Wild-Built” for a short book! It’s a cozy solarpunk sci-fi book about a tea monk and robot 🙂
