Enjoying a slow morning (heading to hotel gym in a bit) but just wanted to share/capture the fun day we had yesterday in NC.
YES there has been a ton of travel for me over the past couple of months, and a good number of trips with Josh (really really nice for us and I know we are very lucky to have a nanny who is willing to cover this kind of thing — though I think she’s probably ready for this to be the last one for a while – which it definitely is).
I just could not resist coming to NC for my former Duke mentor’s retirement party AND to catch Aimee Mann in her “22.5 Year Reunion Tour” at the Carolina Theater, where I saw her on the original tour over 20 years ago.
(I know not everyone knows who she is, but I have probably listened to her music more than any other artist in my college/formative years. So it was extra special for me to see her performing her old stuff!).
Lots of big feelings on this trip!
We flew here early (MIA > RDU, easy + uneventful trip), picked up a rental car and had lunch at an old haunt (well, it moved, but was still fun):

Then we went by all of our old houses/apartments, from West Village in Durham to this home near a tobacco museum to our adorable Chapel Hill apartment.

Don’t ever take real estate advice from me.
(We lived there until someone broke in and stole everything they could grab in 2007 — then we were out of there. Hopefully the neighborhood is safer now.)

We checked in at our hotel at 3 pm, in time to rest up before the concert!

Early dinner @ Rue Cler (old favorite and it is still as good as we remembered).

AIMEE!

She was great, and the audience was soooo polite and kind (also I felt young, lots of people 10-20 years old are clearly in her fan base, maybe from her ‘Til Tuesday days or her earlier ’90s albums). I didn’t really discover her until the Magnolia soundtrack era (~1999) so that kind of makes sense.
Today I am getting to see old friends and tomorrow morning we will fly back but very glad we snuck in this little adventure.

What a fun getaway! I love your dress! I am not super familiar with Aimee Mann but I probably know some of her songs. The mention of the Magnolia soundtrack made me think back on how that was the only movie I have walked out of a theater during! When it started raining frogs my friends and I were like – NOPE. I’ve never seen it since but remember some of Tom Cruise’s lines about worshipping/taming body parts…. Maybe as a college freshman I was too young to appreciate it!
How fun to revisit your old haunts, though. And how convenient that the concert coincided with a retirement party!!
So fun!! Were I port Austin this weekend with the dogs just chilling. Where’s port Austin? EXACTLY.
Always loved Aimee Mann. Is her voice still amazing??
She sounded great and like herself!!
Oh this sounds so fun! A trip down memory lane. I have to say I don’t know Aimee Mann, but I’m pretty out of it when it comes to these things. I love Josh’s drink- I think I would have to order it just for the name alone!
I have to comment on your black outfit. Sarah, it is PERFECTION! And I love, love, love those shoes.
aww thank you!
So fun!
