Every call week should come with a 3 day respite from clinical work like this one!
(Do I have enough vacation days to actually make that a reality? Maybe! It would mean strategically taking 5 days per year. Something to consider and maybe working Christmas week next year when I usually take off will allow me to do that. I haven’t entirely planned out next year’s PTO use yet and I need to do that.)
My usual non-clinical days are Monday and Wednesday, and today is Rosh Hashanah (and happy New Year to anyone celebrating!), so I had requested off. We don’t really do anything religious, but the kids are all off of school and I figured I would take off too. Plus, we went to a lovely celebration last night in South Miami (close friends of the family who throw a yearly party) so it was amaaaazing to be able to sleep in today, too.
My time tracker revealed I was in bed for NINE HOURS. Even when I don’t get interrupted sleep on call (and honestly, despite last week being very busy during the days, the nights were NOT bad!) I just don’t sleep well. I bet my deep sleep is compromised because I sort of keep ‘one ear open’ to hear my phone go off. SOOO last night felt super therapeutic!
IN OTHER NEWS:
- Sarah wrote recently about her fall routines. I finally feel like we are settling into ours. We now have one “respite day” each week where no one has anything late — Wednesday! We also don’t have super busy weekends this year (well – mostly, A does have gym on Saturday 10:30 – 2) and I need to make better use of those days.
- Our weather continues to be terrible. ~6 more weeks of this and then we should have ~5ish months of relatively nice weather. I cannot wait.

- You know what that weather is good for though? Drinking tea and reading dark books. I just started Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo. So far it’s OMG GORY AND WEIRD and not my usual genre but I’m going to keep going for at least 50+ pages and see how I feel (it’s a book club book).
- My Hobonichi is supposed to arrive today! I am excited. Hopefully the box will stay dry.
- The news continues to . . . well, there’s a LOT THERE and I do not want to host a debate forum in this space (and feel ill-equipped to do so, since I am no kind of expert). But, yeah — it’s a lot. My strategies continue to be to corral news to a small portion of the day and look for sources that feel helpful (for me: Pantsuit Politics + Ezra Klein and I am open to learning about others, though I don’t want to spend hours per day immersed in it). And, to generally try to be kind and make a positive impact on the world in my own small ways. Whether it’s realistic or not, I will continue to hope for a future with more kindness and connection and less divisiveness and violence.
THE REST OF TODAY
- Some work (BLP ep, uploading BOBWs, etc)
- C has a track meet and I am finally off to watch! Excited to see him race.
- Continue to grant myself extra rest and care after the higher intensity week I just had.
DRESS FOLLOW UP
I didn’t wear the dress I posted about last night! At the 11th hour I decided it was too casual (and possibly I did not feel like ironing/steaming it) and pulled out a dress from maybe . . .2019? Excuse the dour expressions . . . they reflect the wardrobe panic I was feeling in the moment.

I do think styled right (and ironed) it will be cute. Just more of a casual dress than an “event” dress.

Both of those dresses are adorable and will be fantastic when steamed/styled. When I’m feeling…unmotivated…about ironing, I send it to be ironed by the dry cleaner.
I love both dresses. Super cute! And yessssss to a three-day weekend post call. How can I get my husband to set that up, lol?
You are reading Ninth House!!!! I hope you love it! It is one of my favorite books and I am pretty sure it’s my all-time favorite fantasy book (which is kind of unfair since I don’t really read fantasy). The sequel is so good too. I cannot believe how well constructed both books (and the world of the novel) are. Okay – no pressure, I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea.
Yesssss I love Ninth House and the sequel, Hell Bent!! I do read a lot of fantasy and those are very high on my list of favorites. She does such a great job creating excellent characters.
Hi Sarah, first time commenter. After recent news events, I took the plunge and deleted all social media. Couldn’t do it anymore. I’ve always been inspired by your responsible media consumption and love what you have to say about the subject. It’s been two weeks without FB & IG and remarkably, I don’t miss them much at all!
Yes- for anyone planning a Florida vacation, do NOT come in September!!! HOnestly, I don’t mind the rain usually- it’s a nice break from the incessant sun and heat. I am looking forward to cooler temps though (and I hope our homecoming game doesn’t get rained out this week!)
That’s a nice way to end call week! So if you were to replicate this in the future it would mean just taking the Tuesday off? That seems possible. And it would make the call week easier, knowing you had that break to look forward to.
I like your take on the news/state of the world. Although I do have opinions about what’s going on, I’m not one to be super active and go out protesting. Like you, I try to make an impact in other ways- I’m sure there are people who would say that’s a copout (and they may be right!) but it’s what I’m comfortable with right now.
Love both dresses!
yes! I have 6 weeks of call per year, but one of them is just days so I don’t need a “recovery” for that one. Since I’m already non-clinical Monday & Weds, taking those 5 Tuesdays would mean always having 3 days to rejuvenate (and catchup on non clinical things which invariably pile up during call). I am going to see if I can swing it!!!
Both dresses are adorable. That plum colour is one of my all-time favourite shades. The checkered dress is so chic and screams white sneakers and strolling down the streets of Paris in the fall (or Wolfville – haha).
ha!!! I could see that but I’m pretty sure it would arrive VERY wrinkled
