Weekend

5 on a Friday: Fun Things Edition

July 17, 2026

1- “Phase 2” of our summer officially begins next week, with G/C mostly done with camp, A done with geometry, and our nanny going on vacation. Obviously it’s a letdown that we’re not getting ready to leave for Hawaii, but I don’t think it will be toooooo bad. I have fun stuff this weekend (see item #5!) AND we booked a short beach trip over part of the week after next (that I booked on points, because why not), so there are multiple bright spots to look forward to and that, to me, is very very helpful.

2- Music Friday:

Today’s selection is the new one from Gracie Abrams, Daughter from Hell. I do appreciate that they are selling it on CD (though wonder who is actually buyiing it on CD?) and that the artwork looks like something out of the 90s.

Gracie Abrams, Daughter from Hell

The NPR All Songs music critics really liked it but I am currently still digesting it. It’s VERY Taylor coded, but I also hear some Olivia in there (and I feel like Olivia has a more interesting voice, though I’m sure others might feel otherwise).

Anyway! I DO continue to love New Music Friday and using it to listen to something new almost every week. I actually think it would be cool to name 2 “Albums of the Week”, one old and one new and then play them on repeat for a week in the car. Maybe an interesting 2027 project, we will see!

3- 2027 MAGNET planners are out from Aura Estelle today! I am ordering one to review and also because (gasp) I think I might TRY using something that’s not Hobonichi next year for my main planner mostly because I think I’d find it kind of inspiring to work with a different layout. (THAT SAID I WILL still be ordering from Japan because come on, I will need at least a Weeks and maybe an A6 and some other things.)

4- We started watching Elle (Amazon Prime), the Legally Blonde high school “prequel” of sorts. It is . . not that great. It does get points for some cute ’90s touches (clear phone, anyone?) but mostly just makes me want to watch Clueless or the actual Legally Blonde. So, I’m not sure we will finish the season. But it was fun to try, I guess?

Josh and I WILL be finishing the rest of Beef Season 2 (Netflix), though. There was a crazy ending to the last ep and I’m dying to find out what will happen next. This show is very . . . bloody, and I think most fans of White Lotus would enjoy it! (Does ANYONE else watch? I feel like I haven’t heard anyone talk about it!)

5- SOOOO the fun I alluded to this weekend is that Kae is coming to visit!!! We had been kind of trying to make a FL weekend happen, but when Josh got injured and our summer plans dissolved she volunteered to come hang out and now it’s happening and I am so excited! We don’t have any really fancy plans for the weekend but we just plan on hanging out a whole bunch, relaxing, and I will very much enjoy showing her ‘in person’ all the things I chat/text her about IRL. Including the noise/clutter level of our home . . . ha. You KNOW it’s true friendship when you are willing to expose all of that!!

(Don’t worry Kae I will make sure all the bathrooms are respectable and that you have a clean freshly made bed. But beyond that, it’s anybody’s guess!)

Have the best time with Kae! I wish I could teleport and join you two! I’m glad Kae was able to visit to give you a bit of a mood boost. I love those unplanned weekends with friends. I’m sure you’ll spend most of the time catching up/talking!

You’ll have to come to the Midwest for a girls weekend at some point! Minnesota and Wisconsin are such great spots in the summer!

I would definitely come to WI to see you in fall 2027! And I hope nothing prevents you from coming to PES!

Teenagers are buying CDs. Or at least mine is.

I kinda love that! C has a record player and bought records. But no one has asked for a CD . . . yet

We gave my son a record player for HS graduation (along with college tuition and a new laptop) and he picked the specific one he got because it has a CD player. All its missing is a double cassette deck 😂 Apparently, retro is in.

My 9 year old has a cd player and we buy her CDs, it’s great. And my husband owns a vintage shop and the young people love to buy CDs, as well as records. Have so much fun with Kae!

Beef Season 2 is fantastic and full-on, it also reminds me of The White Lotus. We have two episodes to go.

One scene was one of the most disturbing things I’ve ever seen…such a simple play-on-words concept that I think will forever stick with me…we have this type of tree at our place, and can I enjoy juice from it now???

That’s so great that Kae is coming. Have a wonderful time! And definitely come to WI sometime too!

Have so much fun with Kae. Way to pivot.

We buy CDs for T because we are pretty stingy on screens and don’t have a streaming subscription.

As your IRL/local friend, I can say with confidence that the noise/clutter level of your home is NOT as bad as you make it sound!!

I am happy to hear you’re pivoting on your summer plans and have some cool things on the calendar, especially that visit from Kae! YAY! I am so glad she can make it happen to come and hang out with you!

I just finised reading the Kae recap–it’s so nice when our friends know we need them. <3

And SO FUNNY–I just searched your blog looking to see if you had ever reveiwed an Aura planner, as I'm super interested. Now I'm checking my email and see you ordered one. I'll be able to look through them in person next week at Yoseka's Stationery Fest and do not know think I'll be able to resist buying one. I also end up back in a Cousin, but I feel like I have to try (seems perfect for my needs) and I love the green color.

So jealous you’ll be at Stationery Fest!!! And yes I’m excited to review and play with it. Which layout are you considering?
