WEEKEND PLAN: Normal Life Edition

August 22, 2026

Realizing this is my last ‘normal’ weekend for few weeks and wanting to savor the magic that an “everyone home, no call” weekend contains.

TODAY

  • G tennis (will take my customary walk while she plays + watch the beginning/end)
  • library
  • returns (bra quest failed, plus a pair of ballet shoes that were too big)
  • gym. SOOOOO I already attempted to go, but as it turns out LA Fitness opens at 8 AM on Saturdays. I feel like that is LATE, as far as a gym is concerned! But fine. I drove there and the parking lot was empty! Thankfully I have a pretty open day so I will just go back later. (And I had a reasonable attitude about it, ha.)
  • various kid driving (C has guitar; A has gym)
  • ? pool with various kids for an hour maybe?
  • POSSIBLY doing some of my usual Sunday planning a day early? We will see . . .
  • 15 minutes of the Dolphins game (this is what I’m committing to, ha)
  • something fun tonight!

TOMORROW

  • 9 AM Pilates
  • TJs run vs Instacart (TBD)
  • C’s guitar concert (note to self: bring earplugs, likely loudddd)
  • Sunday dinner from my new cookbook!
seriously so many good recipes in here
  • time to read / chill — currently reading Whistler (may finish this weekend, and loving it) and The Glass Castle, which A was assigned in school and which is . . . a lot (I am honestly kind of surprised this was a 9th grade pick but it’s probably good I’m reading it too so we can discuss!).

I really don’t have any work that is super pressing that I have to cram in there (YAY) and really just want to savor the normalcy. Next weekend I will be going to PHL (w G!) to see my family (and Laura) and the weekend after that is Labor Day and we’ll be doing our now-traditional Hawk’s Cay trip.

(Then I feel like we have a high concentration of travel / call / busy weekends all the way to the end of the year so . . . really going to lean into this chill one!).

We are having a fairly chill one as well. T went to climbing and we had our normal coffee at the lovely Irish cafe next door. It’s nice to be a regular at a place. The sculpture school is doing an open day for kids today, and I’m realising I should have brought a book. And then seeing an author and the book festival tomorrow. So stuff to do but nothing too intense.

We did some planning over coffee and booked a trip to London to see Hamilton which will be our joint Christmas present.

I got that cookbook from the library but also subscribe to her substack and already planning to cook several recipes this week. I am so obsessed with her recipes. All of her ‘chops’ which are really salads are so great and i’ve been really leaning into them for my lunches. My daughter has repeatedly asked for the jerk chicken with strawberry salsa for dinner and it is SO GOOD! And, i do love to cook but I like the way she (and her team) writes her recipes and the veggie-forward nature of many as that’s something I want to focus on.

I want to get that cookbook from the library. I could use some inspiration.

We leave for our week at my parents on Monday morning so this weekend feels different since we won’t be working next week. I am feeling so very burned out so am very ready for this vacation! We have plenty to keep us entertained this weekend, though. We’ll go to the library this morning and then have a meet up with friends at the pool. Tomorrow we’ll hit up the farmer’s market, there’s a kindergarten playdate meet up, and my MIL is coming over for a belated bday celebration for my husband (bday was 8/18).

I’m glad you have a trip to PHL on the horizon. I’ve been thinking about your dad and hoping he’s recovery ok.

I loved The Glass Castle. I read it years and years ago. And it’s a book I still think about. But yes- a lot for 9th grade.

I was given Caro’s last cookbook from the publisher when I was working closely with Emily Oster (Emily and Caro often do collabs) and I cook from it so much that my 10 yo always asks “Is this from What to Cook When You Don’t Feel Like Cooking”? And then he laughs and laughs because he thinks the title is hilarious. But seriously, I am sent a weirdly large number of cookbooks most of which I don’t use, but I cook from this cookbook at least once a week.

Wow, yes, I would not have expected the Glass Castle to be assigned to ninth graders either! It’s a great book, though. And 8am is waaaay too late for a gym to open on Saturday! I would have been mad 🙂

Came here to say both of these things, haha! My gym opens at 7:00 on Saturday and 8:00 on Sunday—Sunday makes sense but I’m glad it’s earlier on Saturday! And yes, Glass Castle was good, but does seem a bit heavy for ninth graders.

Weekend gym hours starting at 8 seem absurd to me, but then again the gym where my parents live in bfe was only open 10-2 on sundays so maybe it’s not that uncommon? I’m on call tomorrow… bah! Today I went for a run, lifted some weights, and worked on a presentation. I’m trying to think of something fun to do for the next few hours that doesn’t involve eating out or drinking and am coming up with not-much. I may read a bit (summer of seconds chances) or watch some tv before I go to bed at 8:30. This week I did an experiment where I put my legs up as much as possible and it seems to have helped a lot with my leg swelling and foot pain, so… yay! Hopefully tomorrow won’t be heinous. 🙂

I don’t know if you like Ted lasso but I’m finding season 4 delightful!

Thank you for reminding me about TL!! We were talking about it in the OR the other day and it had totally slipped my mind.

I’ve started making a point to read some of the books the kids are reading at school (or my teen who reads for pleasure) and it makes for great conversation and connection. The school books can definitely be heavy, even at late elementary school i.e. Efren Divided, but also helpful to reinforce how lucky / privileged we are and broadens their perspective.

I used to go to YouFit, and they opened at 8 am on weekends. But then my daughter wanted EOS because that’s where her friends go, so we got the family membership. My big complaint is that it can be VERY crowded- but the good thing is it’s open 24/7. And now I’m going to the gym at 7 am on Saturdays before work, which I couldn’t do at YouFit. And, 7 am on Saturdays is a less crowded time, yay. Hope you got your workout in today.
Hope you enjoyed your 15 minutes of Dolphins, lol. We finally got a new antenna so we were able to watch it as well!!! Actually I missed most of it between work and napping, and they lost anyway… but preseason games don’t mean anything.

I did! I just went at noon (worked well between A’s gym drop-off and C’s guitar pickup – Josh and I tag teamed well!) . I did watch 15 min and managed to mostly follow the ball (THIS IS HARD FOR ME WHAT CAN I SAY). Josh is not very optimistic about the dolphins upcoming season I hate to say . . .
