(Another heartbreaking news story today. My heart goes out to those impacted and I will be donating to Everytown this weekend, because I feel like at least that is something I can do.)
AND there is no appropriate segue, but I am going to continue this traditional 5-on-a-Friday post. I hope everyone is headed into a restful + peaceful weekend.
1- CALL WEEK REPORT: I feel pretty confident in saying at this point that things went reasonably well! Yesterday was super busy and last night was a bit stressful but all was well in the end. I am so excited to be able to SLEEP tonight.
I think I kept my wits about me reasonably well this time. It definitely helped being completely caught up + done with my creative work — there was nothing I had to think about or worry about for either podcast, and I greatly appreciated the space. I also consciously avoided adding any life ‘extras’ (kid appointments, for example) and gave myself an ‘anything goes’ policy when it came to various habits and my workouts and the funny thing was that while I ended up doing most of my usual stuff ANYWAY, not having the (completely self-imposed pressure) felt really good.
I’ll be typing out my signout email this afternoon and even if it’s mayhem, I’ll be handing off to my colleague at 5 pm (I do not think it will be mayhem, btw, but you never know). I’ll be covering next weekend, which I truly don’t mind. SPLITTING THE WEEKS HELPS SO MUCH.
2- MUSIC THIS WEEK kind of took a backseat to listening to lots of Weezer / The Shins before and after the concert! I will share 2 faves from last week though:
Danielle Ponder Everything Has Changed – omg what a VOICE and such an awesome mashup of genres. She is also a lawyer and formerly served as public defender (quite the career pivot).
Jess Williamson A Mile South of Heaven – country-tinged folk? Folk-tinged country? Not sure but I really liked it. Laid back vibes and lovely melodies.

3- WEATHERRRR. Welp, apparently we are about to get a lot of rain. Not ideal for the Keys, but we will survive. Apparently the extreme El Nino conditions mean that us Floridians can’t count on a lovely dry and sunny winter like we usually have! I am hoping this doesn’t pan out!?
If you are enjoying crisp fall temps where you are . . . I’m jealous. (Though I did enjoy the video of crunching leaves Kae sent me yesterday!)
4- TED LASSO / FUTURE TV! We finished the season earlier this week. I have to say I think I liked this season the most of all! But now we need a new family show. And in other TV news (but probably not for the fam): Girls is going to be back for a limited run! I will 100% be watching that.
5- OTHER THINGS: UMMM not MUCH new to report! Still reading Shampoo Effect and Work Clean, still working on G’s room organization, and still wearing a heart monitor. I am honestly pretty sure the results are going to be kind of bad (it’s been a PVC / bigeminy fest around here) but hopefully can help figure out what to do to fix that.

Yes, I heard that El Nino is going to bring us more rain than usual the next few months. I ALSO heard we’re supposed to have a warmer than normal winter, but I’m ignoring that part. You never know with a rain forecast- it could rain, or not. Fingers crossed for your trip (hopefully you’ll have fun no matter what).
Congrats on making it through call!
ugh!!! that is sad 🙁 October has been so hot, blah.
We just got back from a week in the Bend area after visiting family in Portland. It is a really cool town with terrific, kind people. As we headed into town on a Sunday, we stopped to grab a takeout lunch at a place I had heard about. It was in the middle of a neighborhood with homes/condos of different sizes and a neighborhood town square which hosted a farmer’s market and numerous other community events. I watched 3 boys having fun together while they biked around the square. I remember saying to my husband, “this is idyllic. What a great place to raise a family.” I am somewhat haunted by those thoughts now. We both remember driving past the school where the shooting occurred. We noticed it at the time because the architecture was so different from typical East Coast brick schools. I can’t stomach the fact that this has happened to yet another community.
oh that is so sad. yes whole thing is heartbreaking. and the haunted feeling is an apt description.
Woo hoo for being done with call!
I am glad to hear that you enjoyed the latest season of Ted Lasso! My husband told me he’s heard lackluster reviews, but the fact that you liked it best of all makes me want to give it a shot.
I am traveling so did not know about the school shooting until it was mentioned at the end of the NYT podcast I listened to today on the way to the airport. I am so devastated for that school community. Ugh.
I am sorry to hear that you fear the results of the heart monitor will not be good. But it will he good to adjust your treatment plan so your condition is better managed. It’s tough to see evidence that it’s not adequately managed right now, though…
I love that we are reading The Shampoo Effect at the same time!!
