Break Week!

May 16, 2023

I had a super-busy clinical day yesterday (I finished my notes with my usual strategies, but it felt like a bit of a whirlwind!).

The rest of this week is a break, and I am here for it. I feel slightly guilty because . . . well, I just got back from San Diego. That did have elements of a break, too — from family life AND from clinic! But while this is all true AND it was totally fun, the days contained a lot of learning and focus, and were overall pretty long + packed.

This week is . . . spacious. On purpose! Today is a BLPA day that I left relatively open, and tomorrow Josh and I are headed on one of our typical 48-hour retreats! I took PL (paid leave) days from work on both Weds and Friday. Mostly the kids will be in school, but our nanny will be with the kids overnight for the 2 nights. Notably, this setup is preferred by all parties to a weekend getaway!

We are trying a different hotel, but the view will probably be similar . . .

I am accruing paid leave at a a slower rate now that I am part time (60%), but I had a decent backlog from the past couple of years so . . . I’m just using it.

(I do track my PL days — and it feels weird to be letting my balance shrink somewhat but then again . . . what am I ‘saving’ it for? Not a major illness/emergency as disability time is actually separate. I will try to keep a cushion but not a huge one. There is a limit as to how much can be accrued but admittedly I’ve never been over it — what can I say, I like vacation!).

Podcast-related work doesn’t exactly stop, but I have episodes ready for next week so things are good on that front! I hope to spend Weds – Friday:

  • Planning/dreaming about the future including identifying future priorities (part of this solo related to more business stuff, and part with Josh related to family life and also helping him organize his goals lists)
  • RELAXING. I don’t know that I’ll have a full spa day (as mentioned in the BOBW 100 dreams ep!) but Josh and I are doing some couples massage ‘retreat’ that looks to be . . . not that short.
  • Getting a lot of sleep
  • Continuing my training plan because of course, but other than a hill workout tomorrow there isn’t anything too terribly punishing on the docket

This is sort of a Mother’s Day / bday / anniversary trip and I suppose that trifecta of events is worth celebrating.

Enjoy your mini getaway! It’s nice that you live in an area where you have lots of options for a beautiful ocean-side getaway! That is not the case for us in MN. 🙂 I mean we have the north shore of Lake Michigan but it’s not quite the same as the ocean.

I am taking my first girls trip in August and decided to go Sun-Thur. It’s way easier for my husband to solo parents during the week versus over a weekend. Similarly, when we went to mexico in December, we went M-F. We thought our parents would maybe come to our house and bring the kids to daycare during the day but they wanted lots of time with the boys so they opted to have them at their lake home. So I totally understand why it’s best for us for you guys to do these quick getaways during the week!

I bet there are still nice places to go through – even a city hotel could be fun OR a (nice) cabin in the woods 🙂

Ooh! This sounds amazing. When you’re done with your retreat I’m curious to know where you went. My husband and I never, ever went away together, without the kids, and now I realize that was a mistake. I hope you thoroughly enjoy it and come back relaxed and rejuvenated!

Jenny, we’re going to Vero Beach! Would be even closer for you (1.5 hrs or less probably!).

Sounds so lovely! Enjoy. I’m curious how you work it out financially with your nanny in these instances?

Even with the full overnights, if school hours are subtracted it’s actually fewer hours in the week than she is technically paid for. (She usually works far fewer than the hours that are on her pay stub but we consider her “on call” for those other hours and it works for us!)
