LR + Call

I did not sleep enough last night (had work stuff at something like 10:30 pm and then midnight) but figured I would rather get my long run in and nap later than postpone until Sunday. Since it’s summer, I don’t trust the weather and thus refuse to throw away a decent morning (73F at the start and no storm threat — for June that’s pretty good!).

I ran 18 miles and my knee felt good, so that made me happy! I had one call from the hospital towards the end but it required a very quick answer, so that was good. I am grateful and glad I was able to get this run in.

I’m currently at the very last gymnastics of the season! I do have to go to the hospital to see patients later today — and WOW our patient list is long! — but I’m feeling good. 2 more nights and I am honestly kind of happy with my coping skills / attitude this week.

(We used to have call weeks start on Tuesday. It’s still the same number of days, but I cannot tell you how much I prefer Monday!! It’s just such a nice feeling to know that I get to start fresh with a new week not on call. With the old system, somehow I felt like the stress ended up fully spanning both weeks, like a call hangover or something.)

PLANS FOR TODAY:

✅ 18 mi long run

✅ Finish I Have Some Questions for You. I think this book has risen to FAVORITE OF 2023 status. Just wow.

❏ Round in hospital.

❏ Play with JetPens stuff that is coming today that I stress ordered!

❏ Take a nap. I probably need to do this before going to the hospital, honestly. Like ~45-60 min.

❏ Meal plan / grocery list (PrepDish this week)

❏ POSSIBLY stop by Trader Joe’s on way back from hospital if I have enough energy.

We have no plans tonight which I am not sad about. Low key night at home sounds perfect to me.

I’m so glad call week has been easier for you this time round!

We’ve had gorgeous weather here but not managed to get outside properly today. We slept in, I had yoga this am and the boys went to breakfast while I was there, then ran some errands. I also convinced T to do a toy sort after he said something was a baby toy, and we’ve managed to get rid of quite a bit! Why do we own two marble runs? Not any more! Somehow the laundry has piled on the bed in my office for 2 weeks so spent an hour with a podcast and folding.

We’ve got some donations for school library and the playground boxes (ugh, it makes me so sad that the school doesn’t have the funds to buy balls and play stuff!), some outgrown uniforms for the school bank, some vehicles for the box in the library play area. I’ll go around town next week like Santa on a bicycle. I’ve got big panniers so I can carry things – this week’s record was 25 sweatshirts that I had taken home and washed from the lost and found, so they could go in the uniform sale.

So happy to hear you got your run in today! And thank you for the review of I Have Some Questions for You. I haven’t gotten to it yet because I discovered The Borrower, her first novel, when looking up this latest one and am still reading it with my library loving child. (It is about a 10 year old boy who runs away to the library!) Although I’ve never been able to say what my “favorite” of anything is, and am only on my second Rebecca Makkai book, she may be my first favorite author. 2 years later, I still can’t stop telling people to read The Great Believers. I highly recommend going into her back catalog too.

You’re killing it with your long runs! Glad your knee is feeling better.

you are already at 18 miles??? when is the marathon? I thought you’d peak 3 weeks before the race. you are getting faster and stronger!!!

This is just for volume training. Definitely not peak. I have many runs like this one between now and December (and some with tempo miles/speed work). Some will be shorter and I think he’s having me do up to 22 a couple of times. I am weirdly … not really phased by the length? I could have kept going today. The only concern I have is will my body hold up. I really hope so. Even though my knee was good today I’m still going to my scheduled PT appt Tuesday to be proactive.

Sarah, I think you should be really happy with your feelings toward call this time around. I’ve been following along for years and I know this has been a source of struggle for you for a long long time. You seem so much more chill and accepting of the interruptions this time around — does it feel like a relief to know you’re coping better?

Nice work on the long run, also! Those splits look great.

Yes thank you for the book rec, I also loved Great Believers so I am going to start this one ASAP (or maybe save it for my vacation that starts in 1 week).

I also just wanted to put out in your blogosphere that we got a Yoto player (kids audiobook player) for my 4.5 year old this weekend and it is awesome! It’s like a Toniebox which I hear advertisements for all the time but overall quite a bit less expensive and you can Bluetooth your own audiobooks and music to it, which it doesn’t seem you can w Toniebox. The box itself isn’t necessarily cheap but when you look at the story cards versus the Tonies that you get there’s way longer content for cheaper.

My daughter literally would have listened to stories for 2 hours yesterday if we’d have let her (we had somewhere to go so had to cut her off lol). I feel like this is a great option for “quiet no screen time” for kids who will sit and listen to stories. Just to file away for future questions.

I feel like G would be VERY into this. I really like the idea!

We use an old iPad with an audible account and I really think it helps support independent play.

We let our son use “Alexa” for listening, but it is hard to navigate podcasts and books. Inevitably I need to give up my phone for some navigation. However, he has a whole system of how to listen to books he is reading on his Kindle that he figured out over the grownups!
