Workout Report + Helene/Storm Notes

October 6, 2024

Appreciated Brittany‘s notes about some of what she has seen in SC/GA. Those states (and others) were hit HARD by Helene and yet there’s so much in the news cycle (and I was distracted by my own stuff AND relief at not being hit) that I didn’t grasp the scope.

If you are looking for somewhere to donate, you can see a list at Charity Navigator – I picked Mutual Aid (highly rated and relief for FL’s west coast, also hit very hard and probably about to get hit AGAIN, so figured they could use all the help they can get).

This hurricane season was predicted to be bad and by mid-September I thought maybe we were going to get away with a less-severe year than expected, but man — it has been a parade of systems the last few weeks and there is another one headed for FL. Once again it is expected to hit the (FL) west coast, but this one is weird in that the path then takes it across the state. I predict at least one day off of school next week though if that is all we have to contend with obviously that would be incredibly lucky. Thinking of everyone still recovering from Helene AND anyone in Milton’s path.

MILTON // we are on the fringe (at the heart) but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a storm track in this direction since we’ve lived here!
Thinking of everyone there and hoping this DISSIPATES!!!

All that said, I am going to pivot to the far less important topic of workouts. After taking a week of very low key running last week (27 mi total!) I went back to full training and it was a pretty good one.

JAX Marathon Training: 10 Weeks to Go

(ummm how did that happen, that’s sort of . . .close)

M: Lovely group run, 8 mi @ 9:42/mi average.

T: Fun workout – reverse ladder with 4 x 3 min (7:15-7:19/mi), 4 x 2 min (7:11-7:24/mi), 4 x 1 min (6:50-7:09/mi). Total 9 mi. 20 min Strength for Runners (Matt Wilpers / Peloton)

W: 6.11 mi while laughing to the Girl Next Girl Fall extravaganza. 9:39/mi

R: 9 mi @ 9:34/mi easy with strides. Slightly less disgusting (like 76F instead of 80F. Could tell the difference though!).

F: 7 mi @ 9:19/mi, just getting it done. Felt good except, you know, hot.

S: 3 mi that was supposed to be my long run buttttttt then there was rain and then there was lightning so I decided to call it and try again on Sunday. Did 30 min Strength for Runners (Becs Gentry / Peloton)

S: 17 total. 4 warmup (~9:30/mi), 8 MP (8:17/mi average), 5 CD (~9:30/mi). I felt limited by my heart rate / body temperature on another warm (77-80F) and humid run (~85-90%), but at least there was no lightning today! I would like my MP to be faster (closer to 8 than 8:30) BUT I think I need it to cool down to do it. Hopefully that will happen eventually. (Before race day. But also ON race day, please!)

Total: 59 mi, strength x 2

Another milestone hit – crossed the 2000 mile threshold for 2024! I celebrated a little on mile ~15-16 of my long run today.

PS: Congrats to Rong and Leif who had awesome races this weekend at the Perth Half and Twin Cities Marathon, respectively!!!

READING

Still not much reading. I need to finish Emily in Paris and THEN I will read again. Luckily I’m not in school and reading is optional! I love it, but enjoying this rare TV journey. And on that note . . off to watch S3ep7 . . .

you ran 7 days!!! That’s a fierce return to training! The storm looks/sounds scary.
I really enjoyed the god of the woods, especially the last 1/3 with a beautiful ending.

I didn’t mean to – usually Sunday is off but Saturday’s storm messed me up!

We cheered for the marathoners at mile 9 which was so fun and inspiring! My Chicago colleague ran his first marathon and did great – finished in about 4:30 (goal was to finish) and his goal was to finish. He was all smiles when my coworker and I saw him!

I hope the weather cools down significantly over the next 10 weeks! It’s been a hot fall all over the place. We will have some days in the upper 70s to 80s which is not typical for Mn in October. I guess this month is Aug-tober. Luckily it was nice and cool this morning albeit a bit windy, but either a tail or cross wind so not too bad for the runners.

The storm damage is so horrible! I never would have guessed that western NC would be so impacted. I spent a lot of time in that region when I lived in Charlotte so it really hits home to see the damage.

Great job on your training! I feel like I’ve never been less consistent than I have in this training block. I got sick, went on vacation, got started with marathon training, spent 6 weeks resting/waiting for my ankle to heal, then I had to miss a long run this weekend because DH was out of town and NOW we have the storm headed our way. I’m hoping to get one speed workout Tuesday and my only 20-miler Saturday. And of course I feel terrible for the people in the Tampa Bay area because they haven’t even had a chance to clean up from the last one!

Yes, the damage from Helene is shocking. And Tampa had terrible flooding from Helene- they don’t need another hit. I hate the uncertainty- are we having school this week? Is the football game canceled? What’s going on? Sigh.
10 weeks till your marathon- you’ll be ready. And the weather should be nice (compared to what we’re used to down here.) Hopefully that 8:00 pace will feel comfortable!

And when you’re finished Emily in Paris may I suggest Nobody Wants This

Wishing you safety! I also have many friends and family affected by Helene. I would caution those reading the information you linked to to realize that the author is spreading misinformation as well—she parrots the lie that the federal government isn’t helping because they are too busy helping overseas. Many commenters there do call her out on it, but I am especially upset that while people are still waiting without power and water (and many have died) that various politicians find it is a good time to sow discord and make the recovery even more difficult.

Ahh I didn’t read her post that way – but I get what you are saying. I still was glad to have the reminder of the severity since I hadn’t been personally aware as I think I should have been.
