Happenings + More Workout-Related Chat

Happenings . . .

  • Lovely fam brunch at Josh’s parents’ house
  • Josh/Cameron made version #2 of baby back ribs (they are trying to perfect their technique . . .)
  • Saturday night we did, as planned, see Elio (it was okay, but nice to just chill in the movie theater!) + went for sushi
  • CAMP DROP OFF!!

As in, I have no kids at home right now. It is so weird. And so quiet. Normally, I would be “managing” kids getting up / breakfast right now and it’s so bizarre to feel like I only have myself to worry about. Yesterday was a work-from-home day and the house was just so empty. I did feel some weird procrastination energy, like “oh, there’s no end point to my day so I can just do whatever because I have ENDLESS minutes to get my work done.”

I did get most of my planned work done, but it was just an odd feeling! I also made dinner (PrepDish coconut curry udon noodles with shrimp & veg) and served it to . . .just Josh and me. Feeling flashbacks to 2011 or something!

(This is the 4th summer A/C have been to camp, but we’ve never sent G! This feels totally different.)

I hope they are all having a blast. Admittedly I am not really worried about the big ones but somewhat anxiously awaiting some pix/a letter from G!

from the weekend

(She’s not even in the youngest bunk – this camp takes rising 1st graders! But she def wasn’t ready last year.)

A will home tonight (for gymnastics; I’m driving her back Weds AM) and they all come home Friday though so this weird freedom will be short-lived! (Then two more weeks, then a week off, and then OMGSCHOOL. Yeah, I know. FL summer is BRIEF.)

Trying Something New, Workout-Wise

I decided to dive into a 5 Day Split from Peloton — this one from Rebecca Kennedy, chosen after reading some reviews online. I even downloaded a tracker, which I printed out! I am very much reminded of my Beachbody phase (this was a really fantastic distraction during 2020).

I do love a good tracker!! Especially in rainbow colors.

This particular split is 5 x 30 minute sessions per week: chest/tri, leg/core, leg/bicep, back/bicep, shoulder/leg). Each workout includes a warmup, and there are longer rest periods compared to a lot of the Peloton strength workouts (and you are encouraged to lift as heavy as you can for many of the exercises!).

I am planning to go through the split for 5-6 weeks, then do something else for a week, then either pick it back up or try another split. I am considering ordering some heavier dumbbells (will reassess after this week whether I really need or not yet, I have pairs up to 25 lb).

Anyway, this scratches the “training program” itch (I MISS THEM!) and with longer rest periods this kind of training is probably better cardiac-wise for me anyway. Though it is hard (today’s wasn’t too bad but Monday was pretty brutal and she already gave a warning about tomorrow – there are 2 leg days back to back and this one was more hamstring-focused, so apparently we are “leaving gas in the tank” for tomorrow).

Anyone else try this split, or have another one they love?

Off to a clinical day!!

I am now craving coconut curry udon noodles like nobody’s business. I will scratch that itch!

The only time that I consistently did split workouts was after I stopped running. I did Caroline Grivan strength workouts on Youtube, and the programs were usually in the 6-10 week range, and then there would be shorter programs to do in between the longer programs. It was fun to have something to follow along with and to have a program to follow.

Hi – where did you find the split tracking sheet? Did you create it? Would you mind sharing it? That is a favorite split of mine, but most weeks I can’t commit to 5 days.

Oh this split looks good! Might have to try it! I invested in a set of adjustable dumbbells and some magnet 1.25lb platemates a few years ago – not a cheap setup a but they go 5-50lbs and have let me lift heavier than I could before without accumulating endless dumbbells.

A friend of mine once recommended I think they’re called Power Blocks? Adjustable dumbbells that apparently are very easy/quick to adjust with a pin, which I think would be key for adjustable DBs….

Yes! We have some power blocks – actually we have a ‘lighter’ set that goes up to 24lbs and then the heavier set as well. My husband was the buyer for exercise equipment for a year for a big retailer and we got these. I really like them and they are pretty easy to adjust though the heavier ones are more complicated. But they are hard to hold for moves like goblet squats but work fine for holding body weight like in renegade rows. We also had the bowflex adjustable as well (I got to test lots of things) and they were easy to adjust but not great for holding bodyweight for said renegade rows. Everything has its pros and cons. But there’s a lot of good about the adjustable dumbbell sets.

I love a training schedule and 30 min blocks is great! I am working through the CG fuel series. It has a good amount of cardio in it so would be better for winter when I am not running but I am almost done with it so sticking with it and then will shift to her iron series.

My 10 mile race training is so lax you would laugh. I wrote my long run distance on our wall cal and then just try to fit in 2 other short runs during the week. I wish I had the energy and drive to run super early but I just don’t. I feel so tired as is! Womp womp.

We are just finishing up 2 weeks with the kids away at camp. It felt like taking my foot off the accelerator with no activities or appointments to manage, and evenings were sooooo flexible. We even skipped meal planning and instead wandered through trader joes and picked out what looked good! It was so nice not to have to make up work hours in the evening for kid appointments/events. Planned a couple dinners out with friends, did some evening workouts, spent time reading, watched netflix (a rarity for me!) and enjoyed a neighborhood concert.

I can’t wait to see my girls on Friday. I would love to extend this relaxed pace for the last 3 weeks of summer, but we’ve got doctors appointments, evening sports practices, etc already on the schedule!

I hope you have some fun things planned for your kid free weeks!
