Best Laid Plans life Weekend

Preorder Bonuses, Sunday Listening & More

November 16, 2025

Sunday Listening

I listened to two super interesting podcasts yesterday:

One was this episode of the TED Radio Hour (hosted by one of my all time favorites, Manoush Zomorodi).

Even more fun, I listened to it with kids in the car, who agreed wholeheartedly with the guest about skibidi being over (and sang their own rendition of the rizzler song). According to C, Italian brainrot is the new vernacular but I am not sure that has staying power either, as opposed to “low key”, “nonchalant”, “-core” and several others mentioned in the podcast.

I also wondered about my Podcast Voice as the guest talked about the various ways he spoke to gain traction on the algorithms. Podcasts and blogs are mostly exempt from algorithms (though podcasts — not entirely) and I do think it has helped those mediums to evolve in a different direction from typical social media.

The other one is from Lisa Woodruff of Organize 365 (also a favorite): Technology is Making Me and My House Dumb. I cracked up listening to her share how unhelpful her robot vacuum and “smart” HVAC systems have been. We actually don’t have a particularly smart home — I mean, there is an alarm system and a thermostat, but that’s mostly it. We generally gravitate away from appliances that have apps (or maybe we just don’t install the apps?). Lisa also talks about her phone use, and I am sure many of us can relate. I “checked” my email this morning right after getting up and was so keenly aware of the dopamine hit I was searching for. I hate it.

I want to pre-order but not sure where to ship to Sarah. A planning party sounds great!

I live in Europe so ordered the Kindle version, maybe that‘s an option for you

    • Reply Sarah Hart-Unger November 16, 2025 at 9:46 am

yes! i was going to say Kindle or audio (the audio comes out in Jan 🙂 ). Which will be like one 6.5 hour much more well planned out podcast episode 🙂

Just submitted my preorder info! I ordered mine from my fave bookstore (The Bookshelf) in Thomasville, GA back in May! 🙂

I want to listen to that episode about language. I don’t hear skibidi anymore either in our house. It’s 6 7, all the dang time! And cooked. It is fascinating how slang can sweep across the country! Especially since my kids are not online since they are very young. And yet Paul knows all the trendy language!!

    • Reply Gillian November 16, 2025 at 7:51 am

@Lisa Paul goes to school where he encounters kids like my 9 year old, Charlie, who has older siblings in high school and middle school. Charlie wants nothing more than to keep up with his older siblings and he spends many hours listening to them talk to each other and to their friends. And of course Charlie wants to show off how cool he is by going to school and sharing all the info he has picked up from his siblings. I am just thrilled if he isn’t teaching his peers wildly inappropriate things like profanity. My sincerest apologies! 😬

Yesssss same with G picking up the middle school slang! She’s quite proud of it too ….

      • Reply Lisa’s Yarns November 16, 2025 at 8:05 am

That totally makes sense! So far he hasn’t brought home anything inappropriate!

I’m a Org365 fan but your impression of that podcast episode was quite different from mine. Here’s what I texted a friend as I listened:

-The internalized misogyny in the way she uses gendered language and her tone of voice when talking about her robot vacuum is…something

-Lisa has literally just realized that people spend a lot of time on phones

-OMG “based on my observation, the algorithm has ended” and “There is just not as much newsworthy news” now

It seems to me like she isn’t really adding anything useful to the societal conversation on this topic and her understanding of the current moment is superficial at best.

    • Reply Sarah Hart-Unger November 16, 2025 at 9:45 am

All fair critiques!! I was more into the robot vacuum discussion than the phone one (since yes, obviously that conversation has been going on for a while now . . .). I guess I just like there is so much “tech will save us so much time” talk when I just have not seen that in my life at all. YET. (Definitely a moving target, but as the benefits rise the risks do too so . . .I don’t know exactly how to feel!)

      • Reply Seppie November 16, 2025 at 10:46 am

I am with you on the ambivalence about risks vs benefits! We had to buy a new fridge and a new dishwasher this summer and I really wanted the pretty glass-paneled Samsung bespoke. But you literally cannot fill the water pitcher without the app – and the app also tracks how often the door is opened – no thanks! So I opted for a less-fancy fridge that doesn’t have to be connected. So glad, now that I’m seeing that Samsung may be pushing ads in the ones with a display screen. It didn’t really cross my mind, though, that the dishwasher would also require an app for some features. So now I can’t delay start or run a half load in my expensive dishwasher, because I don’t want to connect it to WiFi.

These are really fun preorder bonuses! Now I just have to decide whether I want a physical book or kindle. I generally prefer reading on my Kindle (controversial I know), but sometimes things with graphs and checklists are better in physical book format.

Ooh! I did preorder your book and I’ll go submit my info. Those do sound like fun preorder bonuses.
Oof, you have a busy day today! I wish I had time for a Trader Joes run- it’s too far away for me to fit in on a regular Sunday.

    • Reply Sarah Hart-Unger November 16, 2025 at 3:44 pm

Oh man! I have 2, wish I could trade one for the amazing REI near you!! 😂

  • Reply Joy November 16, 2025 at 1:14 pm

Thank you for the pre-order bonuses. I ordered mine from Bookshop last summer and am eagerly awaiting it.

      Aww so glad!!!

I did enter my info on “Preorder Bonuses!” and clicked “Subscribe”, Dr. Sarah Hart-Unger.
I’d like you to tell me if you’ve figured out how to feel about the TED Radio Hour episode “Are we cooked? Algorithms have rewired our language” that features Ms. Manoush Zomorodi, Mr. Matthew Cloutier, Ms. Sanaz Meshkinpour, and others – since if you haven’t, I wouldn’t either.
Since there is a 3D Printer that C got for his bday, and given that I myself work in the 3D Printer Industry, I was thinking if it is the case that Dr. Josh Unger is mainly the one who uses this 3D Printer to make things right now, Dr. Sarah Hart-Unger. If that is the case, then in theory, I’ll need to discuss directly with Dr. Josh Unger about the cases when this 3D Printer stopped working, and how helpful are the staff members at Bambu Lab – the company that makes this 3D Printer in your house – in those cases, and whether this 3D Printer works as he intended it to, and if not, how are the staff members at Bambu Lab addressing that. That way, if he’s not satisfied with how Bambu Lab addresses any of the above issues, and he consequently thinks that the 3D Printer Industry sucks, or that the 3D Printer Industry fails to live up to its promises, I’ll know where he’s coming from. On the other hand, if, besides Dr. Josh Unger, you, too, make use this 3D Printer, Dr. Sarah Hart-Unger, you can notify me that as well.

So happy I was able to order it on Amazon FR. It will arrive on 24 January, but it’s definitely worth the wait! It’s the first time I’m commenting, but I’ve been reading all your posts for almost two years already! Hugs from Belgium! 😊

I’ve preordered to Australia via Booktopia, bit more expensive than Amazon but will arrive in December, not Jan. Hooray! Those bonuses look great, so happy the webinar is at a good time in Australia (9.30 am the next day!). So rare for US sessions 😁👏 can’t wait!

That is so exciting Sophie!!! Thank you!!

Hello, I pre-ordered (and received-yay!) but haven’t claimed the bonuses yet. When I went to the link theshubox.com/preorders it just says the books it out and I don’t see where to enter my details. Please let me know. Thanks! Can’t wait to read! 🙂
