Weekly Workouts: 10 Weeks Out

March 17, 2024

10 Weeks to Go!

It was a really good week of training despite call. Except for the fact that I failed to do any strength. Will get back on that this week! I am in a “hill block” with weekly hill workouts and without a lot of aggressive speedwork right now, and then it looks like a month out from the race I’ll get in more speed. I find the speed workouts MUCH more fun than hill training but I know they come with a higher injury risk so this plan makes sense to me.

M: 8 mi with J, 8:30/mi ave. This felt SOOOO early OMG.

T: 8 mi total with treadmill hills – 5 mi outside then 3 mi with 8 x 40 seconds @ 5% grade. Ave ~9:20/mi.

W: Run with J + J – some light speedwork in there (Jen’s workout) and strides. 9 mi @ 9:20/mi ave.

R: Felt TERRIBLE! I assumed I was getting sick, my legs felt like lead and my breathing felt labored. 7.13 mi @ 9:37/mi.

F: Felt inexplicably much better. 6 mi @ 8:44/mi.

S: 16 mi, 5 warmup / 3 marathon pace effort / 1 recovery / 3 marathon pace effort / 4 cooldown. This ended up being 8:26/mi average and I felt REALLY good on this run, like I could have easily kept going. Weather was neither great nor terrible (69F, 93% humidity).

TOTAL = 52.2 mi // 0 strength although perhaps I will get on that today . . .

(The time to do strength training for me is as a break during the day on Tues / Thurs, and on a call week I lose that flexible time entirely so here we are.)

    Something has to give on call weeks so it makes sense that you couldn’t fit in strength. Your race is fast approaching! I didn’t love hill workouts either. But I also didn’t love speed. Ha. I really loved the weekly long run when I was marathon training as it wasn’t aggressively paced. I would have some MP miles but maybe 2-3 at a time if I recall? So it was mostly a more conversational pace. But I was not trying to BQ! I hope you continue to stay healthy!!

    I like speed workout more but they drain me much more than hills, and more injury prone.

    When does BLP live close for signups? I’m thinking of joining this year as a newbie but long time follower of Laura and your blogs.
