G’s Day
G’s “Mommy Day” (defined in our house as a day you get 1:1 with me and basically get to do whatever you want; frequency is approximately once/year) was slated for March 26 and planned out wayyyy before all of this month’s events took place. This date was chosen because A has school and G/C do not, so we were not planning on traveling.
Was I really in the mood? Sadly, no. But you know what, this particular occasion called for “fake it ’til you make it” vibes, so I did. It felt important that I not mess with it, and the day ended up being pretty epic!
She spent a lot of time designing (and redesigning) her itinerary but came up with the following two priorities:
- the beach
- Poppet Project (crafting place in Miami Shores – love it but it’s 45 min+ away so we don’t go very often)

Beach! We headed to Hollywood Beach (basically just drive straight east for ~35 min until you hit the ocean). The weather was perfection. Every time I go I wonder why we don’t go more often.

(you can see my Invisalign here, yes I started even though the timing seems crazy)
She collected shells, played in the shallow part along the edge, and made friends with tweens (typical G).
Then after a quick Panera lunch we headed to Poppet Project, which is basically an art studio with tons of open-ended crafting materials, guided slime creation, and more.
As we drove she anxiously wondered whether they would still have a basin of Orbeez . . .

She made slime and many other things for ~2 hrs and then we headed back home. I rested on the couch to recover and we called it a day, but I would definitely define this as a success!!
The other two kids will each get their own days (I am going to space them out one per season this year!) so we will see what they come up with.
C’s Party @ Top Golf
I forgot to share anything from C’s very belated 11th bday party! We ended up pushing this date over a month from his actual birthday but the party itself ended up a lot of fun. Certain members of the family have not approved full family shots (and I don’t want to share faces of his friends) so I’ll keep the pix limited but it was a lovely and relaxing day. We even had a sibling pair there (younger sister is one of G’s good friends) which was awesome because it kept her occupied and having fun.
(I love it when I can host a party and not actually be responsible for any of the work, lol.)

Back to Work
Haha, we end the sunny portion of this post. No, it went okay. I caught up on almost all of my results and patient messages (I had help – my colleagues are amazing and helped me a lot while I was gone!). But I did find work kind of tough. I had a lot of palpitations. I was able to get everything done, but didn’t feel like I was able to think as quickly as I usually do (mayyyyybe because I can no longer drink as much caffeine – I LOVED hitting the coffee or stopping at Sbux at work upon arrival).
That said, I know I will need time to adjust. Today is day #2 and should be a little bit less hectic because I won’t have an enormous pile of lab values to address (I had >60 patients’ lab results to sift through). I also have just one more day of wearing my Holter monitor and am looking forward to getting those results, though it won’t be for a few weeks.
ONWARD AND UPWARD. Happy Thursday – here we go!

That sounds like a fun day with G even if you weren’t feeling it before hand. Nice that you got your first day back at work over with hopefully the second day is easier.
Aw, what a nice day with G! I feel the same way about the beach- it’s only nine miles away but we never get there anymore (we went a ton when the kids were little.) But every time I do go I’m wondering why I don’t go more often.
I’m wondering if there’s something else you could drink other than coffee? I know there are energy-type drinks that don’t contain caffeine. I’ll have to ask my husband- he has a love/hate relationship with caffeine and every once in a while it gets out of control and he has to take a break completely.
I hope your second day back is going well! It’s hard to get back into it after a longer break, but hopefully it’s just a matter of getting back into the swing of things.
What a special day with G (WHO IS LOOKING SO OLD AND MATURE, oh my goodness, Sarah).
I will admit my jaw dropped at seeing her in a bathing suit on a beach on March 26th. Um, IT SNOWED HERE overnight.
I have been thinking about you and your re-entry to work and was wondering how it was going. I’m sure it’s overwhelming and you’re still recovering. Plus, an adjustment from regular hits of caffeine to none is a BIG thing. Hang in there, friend. And I’m so glad your colleagues have stepped up to help.
What a lovely day with G. She looks so happy in all the photos.
Back to work does sound stressful, and I hope it gets easier and more routine as the days go on.
So glad to see another adult in invisalign to make me feel less alone
G looks so happy! I bet it was not only great fun for her to have one-on-one time with you, but also very reassuring that there is some normalcy returning after a very scary time. Mom in the hospital has to rank at the top of the list of scary events for kids.
This is so much for you and your family to process–I really feel for you all. Wishing you all the best!
I knew that you and Dr. Josh Unger don’t work at the same hospital, Dr. Sarah Hart-Unger, and I was wondering if both hospitals are different from the hospital in which you were hospitalized during The Event this March. Then I realized that there is a system called the “Memorial Healthcare System” that consists of multiple hospitals, and the hospitals where you and Dr. Josh Unger work are both a part of this system. At that point, I became confused enough that I simply stopped searching.
I can also see how you went ahead with the “Mommy Day” despite not really being in the mood at the start.
And no, you did not forget to share the bday after all.
I also think it makes sense to establish whether there is a connection between you having the level of ability to think that you expect yourself to have and caffeine. If there is, we’ll then think of a method to deal with it.
I also assume that the “nutritious breakfast” in this blog post is sarcasm.
Definitely sarcasm 🙂
And yes, we are same health system different hospitals. The one where I was hospitalized was totally separate. It’s in Miami Beach and actually where Cameron was born!
Thanks very much, Dr. Sarah Hart-Unger.
What a great 1:1 day! The path from fake it to make it was very short! Sadly if I lived in the area I don’t think that I would go to the beach very often either, because I found driving in Ft Lauderdale/Hollywood to be a little tough. Not terrible but there was just enough congestion.
Good luck with reentry into work! It’s got to be tough to go back after being away, but it sounds like each day will get a bit easier.
Any possibility you could do half-day clinics for a couple weeks? Gosh I know this is so hard with a backlog of patients!
Also I love the Lamar Jackson jersey showing up in multiple photos. I’m Raven fan-in-law (my husband grew up here in Baltimore) and love the way Lamar and the Ravens bring our city together. I go to the Four Seasons spa once a year with my friend and RAN INTO Lamar in the spa lobby the day after a big game. I couldn’t resist- congratulated him on a great game and shook his hand. He was extremely gracious.
It is his favorite shirt ever!!!!!!!
What a great mommy day with G! Lucky girl and looked very special- I bet my 7 yo would love something like that, will have to organise. Glad reentry wasn’t TOO bad, but gee I can imagine doing it sans coffee would be particularly tough. Sorry you’re still getting palpitations- good the halter monitor would have picked it all up so you can get more insights soon.
