Time Tracking Report #3: Friday

April 11, 2026

Friday = Clinical Work Day at the ‘other’ office. I just started working at one of our satellite locations this year and I love it. It’s quieter, the offices are so much bigger, and somehow feels less hectic even if I’m seeing the exact same number of patients.

It’s also the opposite direction from the kids’ school, so I no longer drive on Fridays like I used to. Here we go!

4:45 Yeah oof. 6 hrs 45 minutes of sleep = not ideal. But I didn’t feel terrible. I do my usual AM routine (coffee, plan, journal, etc) a little bit earlier because I have an early Pilates class on Fridays.

5:50 Leave for Pilates – it’s a 1.5 class with an instructor I like a lot – she always gets really creative and offers good options for adding extra challenge. The studio is ~6-7 min from our house, so it’s pretty efficient. Class ends at 6:50.

7:00 Home! Help G/C for a few minutes but then peel off to do my own getting ready because our nanny comes at 7:15 and takes over.

7:35 Leave house and place my mobile Starbucks order!

7:45 Arrive at Sbux (it’s on the way to the satellite location) and drink my oat milk cappuccino while writing yesterday’s recap. This has become a Friday tradition for me and I absolutely love it.

8:15 Drive the rest of the way to clinic

8:35 Patients (the first one is late because they went to the wrong location, oops — but that works out because I take some time to clear my work inbox). See all the AM patients and chart prep the PM ones in between.

12:10 Meet Josh for lunch at the hospital caf! This only happens sporadically but I think we’ve had at least two lunches together since I started this Friday satellite thing (he’s at that hospital regularly along with two others). We hang out and another mutual friend/colleague (an endo surgeon we’ve known since she was a resident) and chat.

12:55 Walk out in the sun with Josh because I am FROZEN from the over airconditioned caf and also just felt the need to move a little bit

1:15 Afternoon patients, with a 10 min walk break thrown in there between two of them

5:10 Done! Of note, we only had ONE medical assistant for three doctors on this particular day and she did amazing, so I sent our office manager a ‘kudos’ note — she did a great job and never seemed to get too behind or seem ruffled. It was actually quite a smooth day but it looked very hectic from the outset!

Head home while listening to this album:

Ella Langley: if you like Brandi Carlisle and Kacey Musgraves . . . you will like this. “Choosing Texas” is in my head on repeat.

5:45 Home! Read and hang with kids; G had piano lesson in there (the teacher comes to our house which is great). Usually A has acro, but she skipped due to this weekend’s meet. And we didn’t quite have enough leftovers after the kids ate so I texted Josh (who was at the gym): what about an impromptu date night? I asked A and she didn’t mind being in charge for a bit (ie she had no plans to hang with our neighbor or anything like that). I read Finding Grace while he finished and ran home (yes) from his workout.

7:30 We headed out!

Kae, who thought this was a great idea, sent me basically the same pic of her + Ivan. It was cute!

We sat at the bar at our local Sicilian Oven (the place was HOPPING but somehow there were two seats there like they were waiting for us . . .) and we had the same server we had last time. It is sort of my dream to be a ‘regular’ somewhere and maybe we are on our way.

9:00 Home and hung out with kids / put G to bed.

10:00 Finish ep of the Pitt (we are still behind) etc

11:00 Sleep!

(Don’t worry, I didn’t get up in the 5s OR 4s today.)

Definitely a fun Friday. Hooray for being (sometimes) in the Impromptu Date Night era!

Typing this from the car, with road trip report to come tomorrow . . . wish us luck (and A on her meet tomorrow!).

This does sound like a fun Friday! I like when you do time tracking because we get a lot of DITL posts.
I’m wondering how much “better” your other office is, or if you’re just enjoying it because it’s different. Somehow doing the same thing but in a different way makes things more fun. Anyway, glad you had your treats- Starbucks and a date night! Good luck on the road trip!

Yay for a date night – and a lunch, too! I look forward to the stage when we can leave the kids at home. We are years from that but it will be here someday!

That is a long day but it’s nice to start your day with a great workout. I took a 6am OTF class in manhattan this week and it was a great way to start my day. I would like to maybe try taking one 5 am class/week this summer so I can fit an OTF class in on a day I go to the office. I could get up at 4:30 and make it on time but oof that is not super appealing! I wish I was an early bird like you!!

4:45 is so early! One of the things I hate about resident lectures is that they take place at 6:30, and this I must get up at 5:20. I feel like garbage and it’s enough to ruin my day most times I give it. This is also why I don’t swim anymore — all the local masters teams have practice either 5-6am or 6-7am which is early enough that I feel terrible the entire time and also need a nap after. I will never be a morning person. :-p

Hi Sarah, I’m so thankful to have discovered your podcast and website through Cal Newport recently! I’ve been listening to the episodes in order from the start the last few weeks as I’m driving, and read your book.

I feel that planning and having control over the things we can have control over, and being more intentional with our time really helps when there’s hard things going on in our world.

I have forever loved diaries/journals/stationery/books and tracking things on paper. I used to track my favorite song chart positions (Rick Dees!) every week by coloring in squares in a math book (long before Japanese stationery was available to me in New Zealand!).

I have so much to say about how I plan but so much also to learn from seeing how other people like you do it too. So thank you!

    Rachel
